About the position

The California Department of Social Services (CDSS) Disability Determination Service Division (DDSD) is seeking an individual with strong leadership and communication skills to organize and direct the activities and workload of a team comprised of Disability Evaluation Analysts (DEAs), and support staff, engaged in the adjudication of disability claims for benefits under the Social Security and Supplemental Security Income programs within the Glendale Disability Determination Service Division Branch. Under the direction of the Branch Chief (DESA Ill), the Operations Support Bureau Chief (OSBC) is responsible for a full staff of DEA Ills, PT lls, BSA, and OT. The OSBC engages in program policy analysis and interpretation, resolution of medical services issues, and the case intake process. Additionally, the OSBC is responsible (either directly or through a subordinate supervisor) for the overall planning, directing and coordinating of activities involving approximately 11 support staff performing a variety of complex, specialized support operations. The OSBC analyzes and interprets program policies, procedures, and guidelines in a branch office; analyzes the more complex management problems; prepares local procedures, standards and other guidance material; conducts reviews of problem areas and makes recommendations. The OSB is expected to model Management Competencies in this position. Management Competencies are skills, knowledge, and abilities, which have been identified for successful performance in COSS managers. The emphasis at this first-level of management is on human and technical skills.

Responsibilities

  • Organize and direct the activities and workload of a team of Disability Evaluation Analysts and support staff.

Requirements

  • Strong leadership and communication skills.
  • Experience with the Social Security Administration disability program.
  • Strong analytical ability.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to maintain effective interpersonal relationships with all levels of staff and outside agencies.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in managing a team of Disability Evaluation Analysts.
  • Knowledge of case processing applications used by DDSD.
