About The Position

The Director, Wildfire Risk & Analytics plays a critical role in leading efforts to reduce wildfire risk across AEP's service territory. The position is responsible for involves overseeing the assessment, management, and mitigation of wildfire risks.

Requirements

  • Education: Bachelor's degree in environmental science, Engineering, Data Science, or a related work experience in the wildfire, risk mitigation field.
  • Experience: Minimum of 10 years of experience in risk management, environmental analysis, or a related area, with at least 5 years in a people leadership role.
  • Technical Skills: Proficiency in geospatial analysis tools (e.g., GIS software), data analytics platforms, and modeling software. Experience with Technosylva software.
  • Knowledge: Strong understanding of wildfire behavior, risk assessment methodologies, and regulatory requirements related to wildfire management.
  • Leadership: Proven track record of leading cross-functional teams and managing complex projects. Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate effectively with diverse stakeholders, including regulatory agencies and community organizations.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and implement innovative solutions for complex wildfire risk challenges.

Nice To Haves

  • Professional certifications related to risk management, fire protection, or data analytics (e.g., Certified Risk Manager, Certified Fire Protection Specialist).
  • Experience in the utility sector, particularly in wildfire risk management or vegetation management programs.

Responsibilities

  • Risk Assessment: Analyze geospatial, environmental, and asset data to identify high-risk areas and assess potential wildfire impacts on utility infrastructure.
  • Data Analytics: Lead the development of advanced modeling tools and predictive analytics to assess wildfire behavior, ignition probability, and mitigation effectiveness.
  • Technical Oversight: Ensure effective execution of vegetation management, equipment inspections, and engineering standards.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with meteorologists and internal stakeholders to integrate scientific insights into risk models and operational strategies.
  • Strategic Planning: Develop and implement wildfire risk mitigation strategies, including system hardening, asset prioritization, and emergency response alignment.
  • Fire Weather Indices: Oversee the development and maintenance of fire weather index tools to support operational decision-making.
  • Performance Monitoring: Establish KPIs and monitor the effectiveness of mitigation strategies, using data to drive continuous improvement and regulatory reporting.
