About The Position

Provide the strategic oversight of the development, administration, and continuous improvement of training programs focused on advanced nuclear reactors, positioning AEP as a leader in this area. This role includes responsibilities for simulator development and management, ensuring that training methodologies incorporate realistic simulations to enhance learning outcomes and operational readiness. The Training Director will bring deep expertise in nuclear training, regulatory compliance, and organizational leadership, with a passion for innovation and excellence. This position is essential for ensuring that personnel are well-prepared to operate advanced nuclear reactors safely and effectively across multiple technologies and generation sites.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, education, or a related field; advanced degree preferred.
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in the nuclear industry, with at least 6 years in a training management role.
  • Senior Reactor Operator License or certification required.
  • Strong understanding of advanced nuclear reactor technologies, especially small modular reactors.
  • Familiarity with regulatory requirements governing nuclear training and operations.
  • Proven experience in simulator design, development, and implementation for training purposes.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage diverse audiences effectively.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.

Responsibilities

  • Training Strategy & Alignment - Align new nuclear training requirements with industry best practices, NRC regulations, and INPO guidelines.
  • Ensure training programs meet accreditation standards and support licensing and operational readiness.
  • Program Development - Lead the design and implementation of accredited training programs across multiple advanced nuclear technologies (e.g., SMRs, microreactors).
  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to tailor training content to AEP’s strategic objectives.
  • Establish departmental training procedures and methods for curriculum development and implementation of training programs to ensure that training meets the requirements of the plant and regulatory requirements.
  • Simulator Development - Lead the design, development, and management of high-fidelity training simulators that replicate the operational environment of advanced nuclear reactors.
  • Integrate cutting-edge simulation technologies to enhance learning outcomes.
  • Ensure simulators are updated to reflect the latest technological advancements and regulatory requirements.
  • Stakeholder Engagement - Collaborate with engineering, operations, and regulatory teams to assess training needs and develop targeted programs that support organizational objectives.
  • Provide training-related insights to support project milestones and risk mitigation strategies.
  • Develop partnerships with educational institutions and external vendors to improve the efficiency of workforce development.
  • Organizational Leadership - Build and lead a high-performing training organization capable of supporting diverse nuclear technologies across multiple generation sites.
  • Recruit, mentor, and develop training staff to foster a culture of excellence and continuous improvement.
  • OEM Collaboration - Influence training outcomes with nuclear OEMs to ensure alignment with AEP’s operational vision and workforce needs.
  • Serve as a key liaison between AEP and technology vendors to co-develop training solutions.
