Coupa is seeking a highly motivated and strategic Director, Technical Accounting to join our controllership team. This critical role is essential to Coupa’s continued growth, owning the integrity of our financial statements and driving our global technical accounting strategy. Reporting to the VP, Corporate Controller, you will serve as the company's primary expert on complex accounting matters. You will leverage your deep expertise in U.S. GAAP and SEC regulations to lead all aspects of technical accounting, advise on significant transactions, and collaborate with senior leadership across the organization. This role requires strategic partnership with Legal, FP&A, Corporate Development, and external auditors to navigate and resolve complex accounting and financial reporting challenges.

  • Lead, research, and own the Company's position on all significant and complex technical accounting matters, including M&A, debt, equity, impairment, segment reporting, and capitalization of software development costs.
  • Draft, review, and own technical accounting memos and analyses, documenting company positions under U.S. GAAP.
  • Proactively partner with external auditors to drive the timely resolution of technical accounting issues and manage the external audit process for complex areas, as well as valuation specialists to ensure the accurate and timely completion of recurring company valuations
  • Own and govern the company's global accounting policy library, proactively updating existing policies and drafting new ones to address new accounting standards (ASUs), significant transactions, and evolving business practices.
  • Monitor, research, and lead the adoption of new accounting pronouncements, determining the impact on the company and managing the implementation process from start to finish.
  • Serve as the primary accounting lead for M&A activities, overseeing purchase accounting (ASC 805), liaising with valuation experts, and balance sheet integration.
  • Drive continuous process improvements to scale and automate the financial reporting process, enhancing efficiency, accuracy, and timeliness.
  • Act as a key strategic advisor to cross-functional teams, providing guidance on the accounting implications of potential transactions and business decisions.
  • Provide crucial support for ad hoc projects, complex financial analysis, and reporting as needed.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance; active CPA license is required.
  • 8+ years of progressive, relevant experience, including at least 4+ years of Big 4 public accounting.
  • Deep, comprehensive expertise in U.S. GAAP, SEC regulations, and financial reporting requirements.
  • Proven ability to research, document, and resolve complex technical accounting positions with senior management and external auditors.
  • Demonstrated leadership and project management skills; ability to manage multiple priorities, navigate ambiguity, and lead projects from inception to completion.
  • Exceptional strategic thinking, analytical, and problem-solving skills with a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Excellent presentation and communication skills, with a proven ability to articulate complex concepts clearly and concisely to diverse audiences.
  • A proactive, self-starter mindset with the agility to thrive in a fast-paced, high-growth environment.
  • Prior experience in SaaS or technology industry is a plus.
  • Experience with financial systems (e.g., Workiva, NetSuite) and M&A integration is a plus.
