About The Position

Position Summary: The Director, System Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) provides enterprise-wide leadership and governance for all Environmental Health & Safety, Environment of Care, regulatory, and life safety programs across UCI Health. The incumbent is accountable for the strategic direction, systemwide implementation, and performance oversight of comprehensive programs including fire and life safety, emergency management, workplace violence prevention, hazardous waste management, radiation safety, safe patient handling and injury prevention, and Emergency Operations Center (EOC) readiness. This role establishes systemwide standards, policies, and performance expectations to ensure regulatory compliance, accreditation readiness, and the safety of patients, visitors, and the workforce in accordance with federal, state, and local regulations, accreditation standards, and UCI Health policies. The System Director serves as the system authority and subject matter expert, providing executive guidance on risk identification, mitigation, and regulatory strategy. The position partners closely with clinical, operational, facilities, public safety, risk management, human resources, and executive leadership to integrate Environment of Care and safety requirements into daily operations and longterm planning. The System Director provides direct oversight of system program leaders and maintains accountability for performance outcomes, regulatory compliance, and the financial integrity of systemwide EHS operations, exercising broad authority with limited oversight. Regular travel to UCI Health sites is required to provide systemwide leadership, program oversight, regulatory readiness, and stakeholder engagement.

Requirements

  • Strong organization and project management skills
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills and the ability to plan strategically
  • Indepth knowledge of environmental health, occupational safety, radiation safety, hazardous materials and waste, emergency management, and life safety in healthcare settings
  • Must have experience with the business and practice of best methods for general operation, maintenance and repair of complex medical facilities and building support systems
  • Must be trained in OSHA Hazardous Waste Operations (HAZWOPER)
  • Must be experienced and knowledgeable with all relevant laws/regulations/codes
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience of progressive management responsibility in related area
  • Minimum of 1 year experience in an management leadership role
  • Knowledge of performance improvement methodologies and experience leading performance improvement projects
  • Financial management and analysis skills consistent with budgetary responsibilities
  • Ability to read and correctly interpret or assess complex regulations, contracts and policies
  • Ability to persuade or influence people to take appropriate action
  • Ability to develop, conduct and or supervise training sessions for new and continuing employees
  • Ability to deal effectively with local, state and federal regulatory agencies
  • Ability to apply sound judgment in ambiguous situations and effectively manage change
  • One Professional certification in EHS, life safety, or healthcare safety (e.g., CSP, CIH, CHSP, CHFM)

Nice To Haves

  • Understanding of California Penal and Vehicle Codes
  • Knowledge of University and medical center organizations, policies, procedures and forms
  • Certification in Sterile Processing
