The Director, Supplemental Health Underwriting will join a rapidly growing $330M line of business within The Hartford’s Group Benefits organization. This highly visible leadership role is accountable for the overall underwriting strategy, performance, and profitability of the Supplemental Health product portfolio. You will lead a team of approximately 17 underwriters, including one direct leader, and will play a key role in shaping underwriting strategy, product direction, and cross‑functional execution. This position reports to the Vice President of Underwriting.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 7 years of total business experience, with at least 5 years in supplemental health underwriting is required
  • Deep expertise in Supplemental Health products, including Accident, Hospital Indemnity, and Critical Illness
  • 3+ years of successful people leadership experience; commitment to building strong teams and culture required
  • Strong business acumen, sound judgment, and the ability to operate both independently and collaboratively
  • Demonstrated strategic and critical thinking skills, with experience setting direction and driving execution
  • Proven ability to build strong relationships and influence across matrixed organizations
  • Highly organized with a track record of driving initiatives to completion in fast‑paced, complex environments
  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite required

  • Advanced degree or relevant professional designation preferred
  • experience with Tableau a plus

Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic and operational leadership for all Supplemental Health underwriting activities, including pre‑ and post‑sale underwriting, renewals, policy issuance, and policy changes
  • Lead, mentor, and develop a high‑performing underwriting organization; foster a strong culture of accountability, engagement, and technical expertise
  • Establish and monitor key performance metrics; deliver insights and analysis to ensure profitability, growth, and portfolio health
  • Partner in the development of budget, staffing, and compensation plans, while contributing to the broader strategic direction of the product line
  • Ensure a high standard of service that supports profitable growth and long‑term customer retention
  • Collaborate with Sales and Marketing to support product positioning, market competitiveness, and growth initiatives
  • Evaluate market and competitive trends; recommend and implement changes to underwriting guidelines, pricing, or product features as needed
  • Partner cross‑functionally with Product, Actuarial, Sales, and Operations to set and execute the Supplemental Health strategy
  • Drive results across new business pricing, in‑force book management, and enterprise partnership objectives
