About The Position

This position is responsible for all facets of railroad structures inspection and ensuring the safety of all G&W railroad structures in North America. The successful candidate will be able to operate in a fast paced, demanding environment and be able deliver comprehensive structures inspections on time and in a manner that is responsive to regional requirements. Excellent leadership, organizational skills, resource management and attention to detail are essential to be effective execution in this position.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 5 years experience in railroad structures inspection and engineering.
  • A working knowledge of the railroad industry and generally accepted inspection practice.
  • Ability to accurately express structures condition details in written and oral communication.
  • Ability to accurately assess the structures capacity express engineering terminology in written and oral communication.
  • Thorough working knowledge of FRA regulations, AREMA recommended practices and the AREMA Bridge Inspection Handbook
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and Teams.
  • Excellent attention to detail.
  • Sound judgment and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to lead a geographically diverse team in a fast-paced environment to meet all requirements on time with no exception to safety or job procedures and quality.
  • Ability to work well in a team environment.
  • Basic understanding of database management, programming and software development.
  • Thorough knowledge of FRA Bridge Worker Safety Rules and climbing procedures.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with regions and senior management teams, employees, customers, railroads, regulatory agency officials, and the general public.
  • Bachelor of Science in Civil or Structural Engineering from an ABET accredited school of engineering.
  • Ability to climb structures.
  • Ability to work at excess heights.
  • Ability to work in all weather conditions.
  • Ability to report to work with minimal advance notice.
  • Wear personal protective equipment including, but not limited to, hard hat, safety vest, gloves, hearing protection, fall protection.
  • Work flexible daily schedules, including weekends, dictated by travel distance and and inspection schedules.

Nice To Haves

  • Masters of Science in Civil or Structural Engineering from an ABET accredited school of engineering or Masters of Business Administration.
  • Professional Engineer or the ability to get same within 4 years.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the entire North American structures inspection program from collection of structural component condition information through delivery of the internally peer reviewed inspection reports containing individually prioritized repair recommendations in accordance with GWI and FRA requirements.
  • Oversee the operations and maintenance of the G&W Client Atom AI system.
  • Develop, implement and maintain comprehensive inspection procedures covering all of the G&W North American structure types.
  • Develop, implement and maintain comprehensive inspection training for structures inspection personnel as well as regional supporting personnel.
  • Oversee the structures inventory to ensure all of the pertinent details and information are accurately reflected and immediately available for analysis.
  • Oversee all aspects of the inspection process to ensure no structures are missed or timelines exceeded.
  • Supervise structures inspection team, both internal and contractors.
  • Ensure inspector compliance with GWI inspection procedures.
  • Ensure all finished structures inspection reports are timely, complete and accurate.
  • Audit the structures inspection program for adherence to safety, quality and timeline standards.
  • Manage annual safety, rules and skills training for structures inspection personnel as well as skills training for supporting regional personnel.
  • Coordinate with G&W Regional Bridge managers for inspection support and report delivery and review.
  • Develop and manage the annual capital and expense budget associated with bridge inspection program.
  • Provide appropriate, consistent and timely communication with internal and external customers including purchasing, regional engineering, suppliers and other departmental interfaces.
  • Proactively plan, troubleshoot and communicate issues to ensure inspections are on-time and within budget.
  • Develop and grow regional relationships vital to the success of all inspection projects.
  • Other projects and duties as assigned by the Chief Engineer Structures.
