About The Position

The Director, Strategic Initiatives will lead Walmart.org’s integrated shared value and philanthropic strategy for Walmart.org’s Healthier Food for All program, which aims to support healthier food access and consumption, prioritizing geographies and communities experiencing disproportionate rates of food insecurity. This includes support for increasing the effectiveness of our food donation program and supporting our global retail markets as they expand their food donation programs. This role is highly collaborative, partnering with other Walmart and Walmart Foundation leaders, including program officers in Healthy Food for All and Community Resilience, Walmart operations leaders, our Corporate Sustainability team, and external grantees and thought leaders. At Walmart.org (Walmart Foundation and Walmart Corporate Giving), we aspire to reshape whole systems to achieve significant and lasting improvement in social, environmental, and economic outcomes. We focus on driving shared valued within the business and catalyzing broad sector change through our philanthropy.

Requirements

  • Experience working in a highly matrixed environment; self-directed with the ability to develop strategic frameworks while operating under pressure in complex situations.
  • Ability to influence cross-functional business teams through strong communication, partnership, and consultation, including defining objectives, key principles, issues to resolve, and clear accountability.
  • Experience working with communities in need, with an understanding of structured interventions that drive both short- and long-term outcomes.
  • Experience managing grantmaking and/or re-granting portfolios.
  • Knowledge of key barriers to capital and philanthropy facing food-focused organizations.
  • Understanding of trends and emerging issues across the federal nutrition system, including food banks and emergency food supply, agriculture and surplus recovery, and initiatives that expand access to healthy, affordable food.
  • Ability to conduct complex analyses to inform strategy and measure impact.
  • Demonstrated ability to build capacity among internal and external stakeholders and partners.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Social Science, Communications, or related field and 5 years’ experience managing cross-functional projects for governmental or non-governmental organizations, consulting firms, or corporations OR 7 years’ experience managing cross-functional projects for governmental or non-governmental organizations, consulting firms, or corporations.

Responsibilities

  • Shape and implement the shared value and philanthropic strategy for the Healthier Food for All program, including the theory of change, theory of action, and supporting workstreams.
  • Lead the grantmaking portfolio focused on strengthening community food systems in geographies with limited access to food, both domestically and across Walmart’s retail markets.
  • Oversee Walmart’s U.S.-based food donation program.
  • Serve on Walmart’s Healthier Food Steering Committee, providing thought leadership and subject matter expertise on nutrition and food systems trends and approaches.
  • Collaborate with business partners to build impact through shared value initiatives, including leading major cross-functional efforts with senior stakeholders.
  • Represent Walmart.org at external meetings and industry events.
  • Execute and manage a portfolio of grants aligned with strategic priorities.
  • Build capacity among internal and external stakeholders and partners.
  • Contribute to the development of the broader Community Resilience strategy.
  • Design and innovate strategy while creating structure, influencing stakeholders, and driving effective day-to-day execution of complex initiatives.
