About The Position
The Georgia Department of Public Health is seeking a highly qualified candidate for the position of Director, State Public Health Laboratory. This role is pivotal in overseeing the operations of a large state public health laboratory, which includes microbiology, newborn screening, and emergency preparedness activities. The Director will be responsible for planning, organizing, and implementing laboratory functions, ensuring compliance with program policies, government regulations, and best practices. The position requires direct supervision of scientific and operations managers, ensuring a robust quality management system is in place and that the laboratory maintains its accreditation. In this role, the Director will serve as a technical consultant for all laboratory services, overseeing the evaluation and adoption of new test procedures. The Director will also ensure that the laboratory provides accurate scientific data for newborn screening and disease surveillance, prevention, control, and response. A significant aspect of the position involves providing scientific leadership and direction for the adoption and implementation of administrative and technical changes, particularly focusing on advanced molecular detection and enhancing laboratory bioinformatics capabilities. The Director will be responsible for strategic planning, establishing program priorities based on needs assessments, and collaborating with state and local public health staff to optimize laboratory science utilization for public health activities. This includes surveillance, outbreak investigation, newborn screening, and emergency preparedness. The role also involves overseeing the laboratory budget, ensuring fiscal accountability, and seeking additional funding opportunities to enhance programmatic activities. The Director will supervise program directors for various laboratory functions and enforce personnel policies, including hiring and termination decisions. Travel may be required for this position, and participation in professional workshops and seminars is expected.
