About The Position

The Director of State Government & Regional Affairs will develop and implement AdvaMed’s state government relations program in assigned states. This role involves working closely with member company representatives, AdvaMed staff, and consultants to plan, develop, and implement advocacy strategies aimed at influencing policy issues. The primary focus (90%) of this position is on state advocacy, with additional responsibilities related to supporting membership development, events, and revenue generation.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree, preferably in political science.
  • 6+ years of lobbying experience.
  • 3+ years’ experience in state government relations with a company or trade association.
  • Knowledge of state legislative and regulatory processes, preferably in the medical technology industry.
  • Ability to develop strategic plans for state legislative and regulatory priorities.
  • Excellent written and verbal presentation skills.
  • Exceptional ability to present to working groups and build trust and collaboration.
  • Ability to analyze complex issues and develop public policy proposals.
  • Ability to persuade others and build consensus with senior government officials.
  • Ability to handle and navigate conflict.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with state policymakers.
  • Knowledge of electronic research methodologies.
  • Excellent organizational and analytic skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.

Responsibilities

  • Engage actively on specific legislation and rulemaking impacting the medical technology industry with state officials and staff.
  • Develop advocacy materials, including background papers, letters, testimony, and calls-to-action in collaboration with Public Affairs.
  • Collaborate with third-party allies as assigned or appropriate.
  • Track state legislation through an online database and regular communication with members.
  • Interface regularly with assigned policy or sector-specific AdvaMed work streams to promote state-level priorities.
  • Communicate effectively with members through legislative updates and work group calls, prioritizing urgency of issues.
  • Cultivate relationships with state lawmakers, staff, and regulators to advance AdvaMed’s priority issues.
  • Supervise and manage activities of retained lobbyists and other consultants.
  • Act as an ambassador for AdvaMed, assisting with business development and member recruitment.
  • Attend and participate in events hosted by state-based organizations and national/regional conferences.
