Summary The Director, Specialty Operations is a senior leadership role responsible for the end-to-end operational, clinical, and regulatory performance of the specialty pharmacy. This role bridges day-to-day pharmacy execution with enterprise-level strategy, ensuring safe, compliant, efficient, and scalable specialty pharmacy services that deliver exceptional patient outcomes and client value. The Director reports directly to the VP, Pharmacy Operations and provides leadership across pharmacy operations, clinical programs, technology enablement, quality and accreditation, inventory and fulfillment, and team development. This role partners closely with executive leadership, PBM clinical teams, client services, IT, quality, and compliance to continuously improve performance, drive innovation, and support the growth of the specialty pharmacy business. Success in this role is demonstrated through operational excellence, regulatory compliance, strong patient and client outcomes, high-performing teams, and measurable improvements in productivity, quality, and cost management.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy or PharmD required (PharmD preferred).
  • Active Pharmacist license in good standing; ability to obtain and maintain licensure in multiple states as required.
  • Minimum 5–7 years of progressive experience in pharmacy practice, with demonstrated leadership responsibility.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook
  • Attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and courteously.
  • Ability to handle multiple activities or interruptions at once.
  • Focused team player, who can work in conjunction with pharmacists, other departments, customers, and management.
  • Work independently with little supervision and meet daily deadlines.

Nice To Haves

  • Specialty pharmacy experience strongly preferred, including exposure to clinical programs, utilization management, and accreditation standards.
  • Experience leading pharmacy teams.

Responsibilities

  • Pharmacy Operations & Regulatory Oversight Provide strategic and operational leadership for specialty pharmacy operations, including prescription intake, benefits investigation, prior authorizations, dispensing, fulfillment, and patient services.
  • Ability to serve as Pharmacist-in-Charge (PIC) for the assigned pharmacy location, or provide direct oversight and governance of PIC responsibilities where delegated.
  • Ensure full compliance with federal and state pharmacy laws, Board of Pharmacy regulations, URAC/ACHC standards, HIPAA, and internal SOPs.
  • Develop, implement, maintain, and continuously improve pharmacy standard operating procedures across all specialty workflows.
  • Lead quality improvement initiatives, audits, inspections, and accreditation activities.
  • Clinical Programs & Patient Services Oversee the development, implementation, and ongoing optimization of specialty clinical programs in partnership with PBM clinical leadership.
  • Ensure clinical protocols, utilization management criteria, formulary programs, rebate programs, and care models are executed consistently and effectively.
  • Support high-touch patient services and ensure clinical quality, safety, and patient experience standards are met or exceeded.
  • Act as a clinical and pharmacy subject matter expert supporting internal teams and external client needs.
  • Leadership, Talent & Culture Lead, mentor, and develop pharmacists, technicians, and pharmacy leadership team members.
  • Establish clear performance expectations, conduct performance evaluations, and support ongoing training and professional development.
  • Build a culture of accountability, continuous improvement, teamwork, and patient-centered care.
  • Support workforce planning, staffing models, and succession planning for specialty pharmacy operations.
  • Cross-Functional & Client Partnership Act as a key liaison with Client Services, Clinical Account Managers, and business development teams to support client needs, issue resolution, and growth opportunities.
  • Partner with other WellDyne / HealthDyne business units to provide pharmacy and clinical expertise as needed.
  • Contribute to strategic planning, departmental goal setting, and enterprise initiatives.
