About the position

Design, develop and implement next generation observability platform that is a critical part of Visa’s operational system, while influencing Visa’s internal standards for scalability, security, and reusability. Collaborate multi-functionally to create design and develop best-in-class observability platform solutions for multiple Visa technical offerings. Work with key stakeholders in product development, infrastructure and operation team to provide the best quality and high reliability observability platform solutions that fit their business needs. Leverage innovative and latest technologies to build the next generation platform which is cost effective with high reliability and scalability. Lead a team of system and software engineers. Provide coaching and support to achieve highest quality of work.

Responsibilities

  • Define and communicate the strategic vision for the next-generation observability platform.
  • Stay abreast of industry trends and advancements in observability, metrics, tracing, and logging technologies.
  • Lead the architecture, design, and development of a robust observability platform that integrates the latest technology to modernize metrics, tracing, and logging solutions.
  • Ensure the platform provides reliable, scalable, and high-performance services to meet the needs of various stakeholders.
  • Maintain and improve all open source software, provide development and 3rd, 4th level support.
  • Provide hands-on technical leadership and mentorship to the development team.
  • Guide the team through complex technical challenges, ensuring best practices and high-quality code standards are maintained.
  • Oversee the entire lifecycle of the platform development, from initial concept through to deployment and ongoing maintenance.
  • Work closely with program management team to develop and manage project timelines, budgets, and resource allocation to ensure timely and cost-effective delivery.
  • Implement and oversee rigorous testing, monitoring, and performance tuning processes to ensure the platform meets high standards of reliability and efficiency.
  • Address and resolve any issues or bottlenecks that arise during development and deployment.
  • Build and manage a high-performing team of engineers, developers, and other technical staff.
  • Foster a collaborative and innovative work environment, promoting continuous learning and development.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including product management, operations, and other engineering teams to align the platform development with business goals.
  • Communicate progress, challenges, and achievements to executive leadership and other stakeholders.

Requirements

  • 10+ years of relevant work experience and a Bachelor's degree, OR 13+ years of relevant work experience.
  • 12 or more years of work experience with a Bachelor’s Degree or 8-10 years of experience with an Advanced Degree (e.g. Masters, MBA, JD, MD) or 6+ years of work experience with a PhD.
  • 5-7 years’ experience leading teams.
  • Proven experience in leading the design and implementation of large-scale observability platforms with latest technology including agents, pipeline and real-time data store.
  • Hands on experience in developing open source software is a big plus, for example, Clickhouse, OTEL, FluentBit.
  • Strong technical background in software and system development, with hands on experience in java, go, python.
  • Deep understanding at system level, including compute, storage and network components.
  • Hands on experience with latest database, including both RMDB like mySQL, MSSQL, TSDB like promethus.
  • Hands on experience in building data pipeline with streaming technology like Kafka.
  • Experience in proactive capacity planning, build highly reductant, reliable system with cost effective infrastructure.
  • Demonstrated ability to stay current with industry trends and emerging technologies.
  • Ability to manage multiple competing top priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong communication skills, being able to work with cross functional teams and key stakeholders to gather and refine requirements for next generation observability platform.
  • Strong experience in people management, leading teams of software and system engineers, managing performance and grow talent.
