Serving all of UnitedHealth Group's digital technology needs, the CDO team is responsible for driving outcomes across nearly 30 million+ human lives with UnitedHealthcare insurance, a number which puts UHC at the top of the pack as the largest managed care provider in the United States. We are hiring an experienced engineering leader to guide AI/ML development and deliver scalable, context-aware search solutions. This role blends technical depth with strategic oversight, supporting cross-functional teams and mentoring talent to meet business goals. Ideal candidates are comfortable in fast-paced environments and skilled at aligning engineering efforts with product priorities. You'll enjoy the flexibility to work remotely from anywhere within the U.S. as you take on some tough challenges.

  • Develop AI/ML technologies to apply deep learning, embeddings, and retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) to build scalable, personalized search experiences that understand user intent and deliver context-aware results
  • Technical Strategy & Architecture: Leads the design and evolution of complex systems, ensuring scalability, reliability, and alignment with enterprise goals
  • Delivery Excellence: Oversees execution of software engineering projects, ensuring quality, timeliness, and adherence to SDLC best practices
  • Innovation & Engineering Culture: Champions modern engineering practices (e.g., DevOps, CI/CD, cloud-native development) and fosters a culture of experimentation and continuous improvement
  • Talent Development: Coaches senior engineers and managers, builds succession pipelines, and drives career growth aligned individual expectations
  • Influence & Collaboration: Operates cross-functionally, influencing product, design, and business stakeholders to align engineering outcomes with strategic priorities
  • Accountability & Ownership: Demonstrates ownership of outcomes, drives clarity in roles and responsibilities, and models accountability across teams
  • Evaluate emerging trends to inform solution design and strategic innovation
  • Bachelor's or Master's in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related field
  • 10+ years in software engineering, with at least 3+ years in a senior leadership role
  • Hands-on experience designing and deploying AI/ML models in production environments
  • Experience mentoring engineers and fostering a culture of continuous improvement
  • Proven expertise integrating multi-cloud platforms, multiple large language models (LLMs), and vendor ecosystems
  • Deep understanding of cloud-native architectures, modular systems, and open-source technologies
  • Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines, DevOps practices, and AI tools
  • Proven ability to lead cross-functional teams and align engineering with business goals
  • Experience leading distributed engineering teams across a matrixed organization, driving alignment and execution across diverse functions
  • Proven strategic communicator with the ability to influence both technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Proven ability to drive alignment and decision-making across teams through both formal leadership and informal influence
