About the position

The Director of Software Engineering at Cox Automotive is responsible for developing and executing an engineering strategy that aligns with the company's operational and product goals. This leadership role involves managing software engineering teams, ensuring effective delivery of technology components, and fostering a high-quality team culture. The Director will collaborate with various departments to implement best practices in product delivery and maintain a commitment to technical excellence, while also overseeing data engineering strategies and processes.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute an engineering strategy to support operational and product goals.
  • Manage software engineering teams and ensure alignment of engineering and architecture solutions.
  • Collaborate with leaders across Product, UX, Architecture, Analytics, and Agile Delivery teams.
  • Build high-performing scrum and leadership teams, fostering inter-team collaboration.
  • Implement and report on execution strategies for project delivery, ensuring quality and reliability.
  • Communicate effectively with stakeholders regarding project scope and timelines.
  • Oversee engineering processes and generate new processes as needed.
  • Work with senior leadership on process improvement and organizational change to support Agile values.
  • Allocate teams to high-value investments based on business backlog and release planning.
  • Formulate mitigation strategies for long-running or high-risk projects.
  • Track and measure project work to assess overall success and team morale.
  • Manage career progression for team members, including hiring and performance reviews.
  • Oversee budgeting for local teams, including headcount and project support.
  • Implement local engineering brand awareness strategies and evolve team culture.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree recommended; Master's degree in a related field desired.
  • 10+ years of relevant experience, with at least 5 years in a leadership role in software development.
  • Prior experience as a Data Engineer or Software Engineer.
  • Proven ability to lead and advance software teams effectively.
  • Experience developing and implementing product delivery best practices.
  • Familiarity with Agile principles and delivery approaches.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Background in data engineering within a high-growth company.
  • Exceptional leadership skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with high-volume transactional databases.
  • Experience developing data science applications using platforms like Snowflake.
  • Experience developing a successful data governance strategy in an enterprise setting.
  • Familiarity with Amazon Web Services.
  • Experience using data transformation tools such as dbt.
  • Experience with data curation platforms like Collibra.
