About The Position

The Director/Senior Director, Scientific Communications is a strategic leader within U.S. Medical Affairs team responsible for developing and executing strategies to communicate scientific data and medical education and information to internal and external stakeholders. This role has strategic ownership of the scientific narrative across publications, congresses, field medical materials, and digital/omnichannel channels across all therapeutic areas. The position has leadership, budget, and governance accountability and operates as part of the U.S. Medical Leadership Team. This position oversees the planning, creation, and dissemination of medical information and scientific content to diverse audiences, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and impactful messaging across all Shionogi Inc. therapeutic areas, and specifically leads scientific communication for one of TAs - COVID-19/Virology. Collaborates with cross-functional teams to align communication strategies while ensuring that all communications follow regulatory requirements, industry standards, and align with the overall business objectives.The Director/Senior Director is responsible for overseeing the development and execution of the comprehensive U.S. medical communication strategy, identifying target audiences and key messages across the portfolio of U.S. medicines and development products. Leads all medical communication activities for designated medicines, working closely with a team of professionals cross-functionally and regionally on scientific and medical communication activities. Oversees the creation and review of scientific content and medical communications repository. Engages key opinion leaders and external stakeholders to gather medical insights, develop educational materials and support their involvement in scientific events. Manages projects and priorities to deliver high-quality results. Ensures compliance with regulatory guidelines, industry standards, and ethical considerations in all medical communication activities.

Requirements

  • Advanced degree in life sciences, pharmacy, medicine, or a related scientific discipline is required. Ph.D., Pharm. D., or M.D. is preferred.
  • Minimum of 12 (Senior Director) / 8 years (Director) years of experience for level in medical affairs, scientific communication, or related field with progressive leadership responsibilities. Must include at least 4–6 years of this in‑house experience within a pharmaceutical company.
  • Demonstrated experience leading publication and data‑release impact assessment, reach, and amplification strategies, including measurement of scientific dissemination across congress, digital, and field medical channels; and demonstrated experience leading omnichannel strategies and online medical digital approaches.
  • Demonstrated expertise in the end‑to‑end publication process, including publication planning and execution; deep knowledge of publication‑related regulatory and compliance requirements, industry standards and best practices; and familiarity with the systems and applications used to manage, track, and measure publication activities.
  • Strong understanding of medical and scientific concepts, clinical trial data, and pharmaceutical industry landscape.
  • Proven track record of successful collaborations with key opinion leader and external stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality, integrity, and ethical conduct in all aspects of work.
  • Strong project management skills with the ability to prioritize tasks, manage timelines, and deliver high-quality results in a high paced environment.
  • Ability to maintain a comprehensive repository of medical communication materials, ensuring accuracy, organization, and easy accessibility for efficient retrieval and utilization.
  • Demonstrated leadership in Medical Digital and Omnichannel strategy, including ownership for digital scientific communications for assigned medicines and strategic oversight across all therapeutic areas.
  • Proficiency in using various software tools such as Microsoft Office suite and medical literature databases.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to present complex scientific information in a clear and concise messages for diverse audiences.
  • This position will hire, train, supervise and coach the Scientific Communication team across all medicines. Meanwhile, this person will contribute directly to the execution of some of those medicines.
  • Willingness and ability to travel as needed to support scientific communication efforts.
  • Must live a commutable distance to our US Corporate Headquarters in Florham Park, NJ. Office presence required 50% per month, at least 2-3 days per week.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a core member of the U.S. Medical Leadership Team to represent the overall strategic and tactical implementation of medical communications activities.
  • Develop and execute U.S. communication strategy and plans that convey scientific and medical education and information and that align to the company’s goals and objectives.
  • Identify key target audiences (i.e. internal and external stakeholders) and define key messages to effectively communicate scientific and medical information.
  • Lead the planning, creation, and execution of the overall U.S. Medical omnichannel strategy. This includes overseeing the development of publications and congress materials, digital and social media content, and medical education to diverse audiences through all applicable channels.
  • Responsible for managing the development of proactive and reactive content and materials for the U.S. Field Medical team
  • Lead all U.S. Scientific Communications activities for the designated medicines, working closely and collaboratively with writers, vendors and external partners.
  • Align with cross-functional and/or regional colleagues on communication strategies with product development and commercialization plans.
  • Manage projects, prioritize tasks, and deliver high quality results within specified timelines.
  • Manage the budget for all U.S. Scientific Communication activities, and support the VP Medical Affairs and Medical Operations and Excellence to build the Medical budget
  • Work with and manage vendors in support of development of communications materials
  • Oversee that all Medical Communication materials comply with regulatory, legal and societies’ regulations.
  • Coordinate the Medical Review Committee (MRC) approval of applicable external-facing content to ensure that materials comply with company, industry, and legal/compliance guidelines
  • Collaborate with US and global cross-functional teams, including medical affairs, clinical development, regulatory affairs, and commercial, to ensure consistent and accurate messaging across all communication channels.
  • Engage key opinion leaders and external stakeholders to gather medical insights, develop educational materials, and support their involvement in scientific events.
  • Represents SI MA scientific communications team to internal/external stakeholders such as the Global Publications team, Commercial teams, global teams, healthcare professionals, key opinion leaders, regulatory agencies, and broader medical community.
  • Effectively prepare and deliver presentations internally and externally by assessing audience needs, tailoring content, utilizing engaging techniques, and continuously seeking improvement.
  • Develop and maintain a library of scientific and medical information to support the development of communication materials, including slide decks, training materials, and scientific publications.
  • Maintain confidentiality, integrity, and ethical conduct in all aspects of work.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, guidelines, industry standards, ethical considerations in all medical activities.
  • Maintain a thorough understanding of the scientific and medical landscape related to the company's products and disease areas of focus.
  • Keep up to date with emerging trends and best practices in scientific communication and apply this knowledge to enhance the U.S. Scientific communication strategies.
  • Other duties as assigned.
