Position Summary: Kemper is a publicly traded, multi-billion-dollar insurance and financial services company, and we are seeking a talented and motivated accounting professional to join our SEC & Financial Reporting team at our headquarters in downtown Chicago. This is a fantastic role for a strong performer who is looking to greatly expand their knowledge within a multi-faceted insurance company (P&C, Life) that has exposure to financial reporting under SEC, GAAP, Statutory, and ERISA accounting frameworks. Kemper has a proven track record for developing its people for higher roles within the department as well as other functions and across its operating entities. We seek a detail-oriented professional to assist with a wide range of monthly, quarterly and annual accounting functions associated with Kemper’s financial reporting.

Requirements

  • 7-10 years of experience in public accounting and/or SEC reporting for a large public company
  • BA/BS degree in Accounting or Finance
  • CPA required
  • Familiarity with US GAAP and SEC filing requirements
  • Experience navigating a large ERP environment
  • Effective writing skills and strong attention to detail required
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and time management skills
  • Progressive thinking skills, a strong work ethic, and a knack for innovative solutions
  • Excellent communication skills to interact with varying levels of management and professional staff
  • Ability to identify, analyze, and solve complex accounting issues

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in Workday Financial Management and Workiva a plus

Responsibilities

  • Lead the SEC financial reporting process including the timely and accurate filing of Forms 10-Q/K, 8-K and other SEC documents
  • Schedule and facilitate meetings with senior leadership to discuss business trends and draft management discussion and analysis in advance of quarterly reporting
  • Preparation and facilitation of quarterly end-to-end reporting workflow
  • Manage external audit review comments on Forms 10-Q/K, 8-K and other SEC documents
  • Responsible for ongoing management of Workiva for use of financial reporting, including iXBRL
  • Coordinate with Accounting Policy to ensure compliance with SEC disclosure requirements and accounting guidance
  • Manage team of two accountants
