The Director of the School of Policy and International Affairs and the International Affairs undergraduate program guides the programs’ academic, programmatic, and external structures. SPIA’s graduate and IA’s undergraduate programs are high-quality, internationally focused programs providing students the knowledge and analytical abilities to excel in careers in international policy, international relations, and related topics. SPIA/IA is UMaine’s major source of international policy programming, enlightening the University and State about internationally related issues and policies; and is UMaine’s primary coordinator of interdisciplinary investigation related to understanding and solving international policy issues. The Director works to promote communication among faculty members, practitioners, researchers, and students working in policy and international affairs, thereby creating synergistic efforts that promote scholarly activities and enhance professional opportunities. SPIA and IA are involved in promoting educational programs, conferences and internships that reflect the intersection of policy and international affairs. SPIA and IA are separate, interdisciplinary units. SPIA has jointly appointed full time faculty, adjunct faculty, and cooperating faculty and scholars, and an external Board of Advisors; it offers an MA degree in Global Policy that is professionally oriented. IA has a jointly appointed full time faculty member and an interdisciplinary advisory board from the cooperating academic departments; together with several social science and humanities programs at UMaine, it offers a BA degree in International Affairs and an undergraduate minor. SPIA and IA bring together faculty across campus in an interdisciplinary mode to advance research and education on issues of critical importance in today’s global society, set strategic goals concerning internationalization and diversity, harness significant donor interest to the benefit of students as well as faculty, and provide an educational option that students continually request. Typical hiring range is $75,000 to $90,000 commensurate with qualifications and experience.
