About The Position

The Director of Sales & Use Tax leads the strategic oversight and administration of all sales and use tax operations across Macy’s and Bloomingdale’s locations. The role ensures compliance with multi-state requirements, mitigates tax-related risk, and supports financial accuracy through effective management of audits, data stewardship, and tax contingency analysis. This position strengthens Macy’s financial posture by providing expert guidance, developing tax staff, and driving continuous improvement in tax processes.

Requirements

  • Sales & Use Tax Expertise: Applies comprehensive knowledge of multi-state tax laws to guide compliance, audit outcomes, and risk mitigation.
  • Risk Analysis: Evaluates tax exposure and develops recommendations to maintain sufficient reserve levels in line with business needs.
  • Data Stewardship: Manages the collection and presentation of sensitive tax data while ensuring confidentiality and accuracy.
  • Audit Management: Leads governmental audit activities with professionalism, strong organization, and effective negotiation skills.
  • Leadership: Develops high-performing tax teams through coaching, training, and opportunities for cross-functional engagement.
  • Communication: Communicates complex tax concepts clearly through written and verbal channels and collaborates effectively with internal and external partners.
  • Technical Skills: Leverages Microsoft Office and tax research tools to produce accurate calculations, research findings, and reporting.
  • Analytical Skills: Demonstrates strong analytical, mathematical, and reasoning abilities to manage complex tax matters independently.
  • Organizational Skills: Maintains exceptional organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities to timely completion.
  • Leadership Presence: Exhibits strong leadership presence with the ability to mentor staff, influence stakeholders, and represent Macy’s in interactions with governmental agencies.
  • Candidates with a bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience in a related field are encouraged to apply. 10-plus years of multi-state sales and use tax experience or equivalent relevant experience.
  • Regularly required to sit, talk, hear; use hands/fingers to touch, handle, and feel. Occasionally required to move about the workplace and reach with hands and arms. Requires close vision.
  • Able to work a flexible schedule based on department and company needs.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the end-to-end administration of sales and use tax audits, including scheduling, data gathering, audit hosting, conflict resolution, appeals, and litigation support.
  • Oversee the management and accuracy of the Miscellaneous Tax Contingency and recommend reserve adjustments based on risk analysis.
  • Ensure secure collection, preparation, retention, and presentation of sensitive tax data for review by governmental authorities.
  • Interpret and apply multi-state sales and use tax laws and regulations to maintain compliance and reduce risk exposure.
  • Direct and develop the sales and use tax team, supporting professional growth, cross-functional initiatives, and departmental capability building.
  • Foster strong relationships with governmental officials, internal legal teams, finance partners, and operational stakeholders to support tax strategy and audit outcomes.
  • Identify and implement process improvements to enhance tax administration efficiency and strengthen compliance controls.
  • Foster an environment of acceptance and respect that strengthens relationships, and ensures authentic connections with colleagues, customers, and communities.
  • In addition to the essential duties mentioned above, other duties may be assigned.
