About The Position

As the Director of Regulatory Affairs, you will spearhead the efforts to ensure and promote regulatory and commercial compliance. Responsibilities include serving as the company’s entry point for all regulatory bodies in North America as well as developing and auditing security components of all policy relating to cargo movements. Furthermore, as the Regulatory Affairs Director, you will be responsible for actively managing internal and external industry stakeholders and for fostering a culture of open collaboration and continuous process improvement.

Requirements

  • J.D. preferred or a Bachelor’s Degree with 7 to 10 years of experience in regulatory and compliance matters as well as with management of industry stakeholders.
  • Ability to manage and oversee all projects assigned to the Regulatory Affairs Department to ensure timely and effective implementation.
  • Extensive knowledge of applicable government regulations.
  • Ability to maintain excellent working relationships with regulatory agencies, internal project team members, collaborations, and partners.
  • Capability to establish direct interface with international regulatory agencies in order to expedite approval of pending legislation
  • Ability to inform and educate managers and department heads on regulations and policies that require compliance
  • Understand and apply abstract concepts and appear to enjoy conceptual problems.
  • Accurately apply learning to situations with the same underlying principles but different cues.

Responsibilities

  • Manage and drive Hapag-Lloyd’s North American government affairs efforts and develop and maintain professional relationships in federal, state, and local regulatory agencies.
  • Serve as the point person for Hapag-Lloyd’s CTPAT program and facilitate all necessary reviews, audits, and revalidations.
  • Serve as the point person in communicating with regulatory bodies, including security issues related to cargo and in all dealings with the CBP, FMC, DOJ and other state and local inspectors and officials.
  • Represent the company within trade, government, and security related industry associations and advisory committees.
  • Respond to requests and submit necessary documents to government agencies, ensuring compliance and timeliness.
  • Lead the investigation and analysis of disputes and complaints related to applicable legislation, in particular, OSRA, the U.S. Shipping Act, and FMC regulations.
  • Direct and lead company-wide cross-functional process improvement efforts for all regulatory-related matters.
  • Develop and implement an overall regulatory strategy that forecasts and prevents problems related to non-compliance with any regulation.
  • Ensure that all aspects of the company adhere to the rules and regulations set by regulatory agencies, e.g., CBP, FMC, DOT, CTPAT
  • Implement or enhance company policy to meet existing or new regulatory requirements as they relate to company services and procedures
  • Drive strategic analysis and reporting of relevant disputes, complaints, investigations, audits to identify trends, root causes, and solutions to best mitigate risk
  • Maintain current knowledge of regulations applicable to the company. Monitor regulatory affairs and the effect changes will have on company operations.
  • Manage training and orientation programs to inform the staff on the policies and standards.
  • Drive development and enhancement of internal resources/tools dedicated to regulatory compliance, including compliance training and internal communications.
  • Spearhead creation, coordination and monitoring of training materials including the management of the internal regional intranet page that provides centralized cross-functional guidance.
  • Assist with the development of standards for the company’s operating and production procedures.
  • Provide regulatory guidance and support to project teams including regulatory filing strategies and standards requirements.
  • Prepare US and International regulatory submissions.
  • Coach and develop individual staff members of the department and assume hiring responsibility.
  • Conduct regular performance reviews in line with company’s policy and management requirements.
  • Work closely with other departments on process improvement and communication flow.
