About The Position

The Public Works Director directs the activities of the Public Works Department which oversees a diverse array of essential functions critical to maintaining and improving the City's operations and infrastructure. Through strategic leadership, the Department ensures successful execution of initiatives that enhance the community's beauty, well-being, resilience and sustainability. Under the administrative direction of the City Manager, the Public Works Director is responsible for the administration, direction, and supervision of all Public Works Department activities and employees, including the divisions of Engineering, Strategic Planning and Support, Sustainability, and Utilities. The Department consists of over 500 employees and has an annual operating budget of over $200 million. The Public Works Director performs duties with considerable independence and latitude in supervising and in being responsible for technical and administrative operations of the Department in accordance with municipal policies, rules, and regulations and supervises subordinates through oral and written reports and personal observation. Work is evaluated through conferences and review of progress reports. The City Manager may delegate supervisory authority to an Assistant City Manager.
