As a Director of Product Sciences, this energetic and motivated individual will lead a group of immunologists and cell therapy experts responsible for T cell characterization using established and novel technologies. The team designs, executes, and interprets complex studies to inform and optimize cell therapy process development. They also collect and utilize T cell characterization data to discover predictive measures of clinical outcomes. This individual must possess a profound understanding of cell therapy biological mechanisms, as well as foundational knowledge of analytical methodologies to measure genotype, phenotype and function of CAR-T cells. The dynamic leader will drive the achievement of functional objectives and will collaborate with matrix teams across the cell therapy organization spanning research, clinical development, biostatistics, and technical operations. To achieve these objectives, the Director of Product Sciences will be expected to behave as a servant-leader that seeks to develop, grow, and empower a talented organization composed of scientists at varying levels of experience, expertise, and potential.

Requirements

  • Ph.D. in Immunology, Cell/Molecular Biology, Biomedical Engineering or related discipline with demonstrated track/record of experience leading teams to achieve objectives in industrial and/or academic settings (>10 years for PhD)
  • Previous experience contributing and authoring early and late-stage regulatory filings
  • Previous experience in the development of cell therapy products
  • Previous experience leading a highly functional team of scientists
  • Ability to perform technical, strategic, and operational tasks independently
  • Extensive experience in mammalian cell culture techniques, including isolation of immune cell subsets and maintenance of primary and immortal cells
  • Advanced knowledge of techniques in immunology, cell biology, and molecular biology is required, including experience with flow cytometry, immunofluorescence-based assays, ELISA, PCR, cytokine and chemokine detection, cell-based bioassays and next generation sequencing
  • Willingness to work in a regulated industrial environment
  • Excellent verbal, written, and oral communication skills

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with analytical method development for a variety of cell-based bioassays, binding assays, and/or residual impurities assays is preferred

Responsibilities

  • Develop biological hypothesis-driven studies to characterize cellular attributes
  • Drive the discovery of quality attributes to inform an integrated control strategy
  • Author and review regulatory filings related to product characterization
  • Direct the development of fit-for-purpose methods to characterize cell products, including process intermediates and cellular starting material
  • Drive the development of next generation method modalities, including but not limited to automated and high-throughput solutions, multi-attribute methodologies, and single cell interrogation technologies
  • Provide biological and technical expertise within group sponsored initiatives and throughout the larger cell therapy organization
  • Contribute to various CMC objectives by providing biological and technical knowledge.
  • Build and foster cross-functional collaboration to develop complex characterization strategies relating to product development.
  • Help lay the future-state foundation as the organization prepares for next generation therapeutic modalities
  • Maintain awareness of the competitive landscape in the cell therapy space
  • Proactively support expansion of general knowledge within the cell therapy development function
  • Actively drive the development, growth, career planning, and empowerment of individuals and teams through deliberate and thoughtful strategies
