About The Position

The National MS Society leads the global MS movement, achieving more breakthroughs than the world has seen for any other neurological disease. Today, we’ve never been closer to a cure – the next chapter in our story could be the last chapter for MS. The Society needs a talented Prospect Research professional to contribute to the Society’s innovative revenue growth strategies by driving the acquisition of promising prospects and their movement across fundraising portfolios Society-wide. The Director of Portfolio Management plays a pivotal role in driving a strategic, relationship-centric approach to the organization’s fundraising goals. This position partners and reports to the A VP, Prospect Management and Research and works closely with Society fundraisers to deliver data-driven insights that fuel portfolio development, hygiene, personalization, and pipeline movement.

Requirements

  • 2+ years of nonprofit experience
  • 5 + years of data management or portfolio management experience
  • Progressive experience with increasing levels of responsibility in development, advancement services, or portfolio management
  • Proven expertise in donor and prospect identification, validation, qualification, and analysis to inform portfolio strategy
  • Experience developing or managing portfolio KPIs (retention, upgrades, downgrades, movement, qualification/disqualification)
  • Proficient in data management best practices, including data hygiene, reporting, and query development to support performance and strategy
  • Exceptional communication skills, including delivering sensitive portfolio or pipeline feedback in a supportive, constructive manner
  • Exceptional project management and strategic planning skills
  • Experience using screening platforms ( iWave , Windfall, WealthEngine , LexisNexis) preferred
  • Experience with Salesforce (preferred) or equivalent CRM database
  • Strong computer skills: MS Office XP, Database/Reporting tools, Outlook, Microsoft Teams and Internet
  • Comfortable synthesizing large quantities of information into concise, actionable insights
  • Comfort working in ambiguity while building structure, frameworks, and clarity for the organization

Nice To Haves

  • 1+ year of CRM training , Salesforce preferred
  • S trong skills in relationship building and working across multiple departments preferred
  • Strong partnership and relationship-building skills, with the ability to advise fundraisers and influence without authority
  • Ability to design, refine, and implement scalable processes, workflows, and portfolio governance frameworks
  • Experience supporting a major fundraising campaign or large multi-year growth initiative
  • Experience leading or supporting change management initiatives, including driving stakeholder adoption of new tools or processes
  • Ability to create training, onboarding, or guidance materials to support fundraisers in using portfolio tools effectively

Responsibilities

  • Identify opportunities within portfolios Society-wide to grow revenue and pipeline for
  • Partner with fundraising teams to review and rebalance portfolios while aligning resources , focusing on Individual Giving and Community Leadership
  • Design comprehensive donor demographic coding in collaboration with Technology, Development Operations, and Prospect Research
  • Develop and execute models that track portfolio metrics and KPIs: upgrades, downgrades, retention, validation, qualification, and disqualification
  • Produce clear, data-rich portfolio reporting and dashboards , in partnership with Development Operations, that support decision-making across development functions
  • Ensure high standards of data integrity, compliance, and confidentiality in all portfolio practices
  • Continuously evaluate and optimize portfolio tools, AI applications, and systems to enhance efficiency and accuracy
  • Create and maintai n training materials and onboarding materials to support adoption and efficiency
  • Participa te in Society work teams as assigned
  • Participate as an active member of the Society’s Donor Relations & Operations team, contributing to annual team operating goals.
