About The Position

The Director of Marketing and Communications develops, creates and implements communications strategies that align with and advance TNC's 2030 goals and overall conservation, fundraising and policy goals for the Hawai'i + Palmyra business unit primarily, while also managing the marketing and communications activities for the Micronesia + Polynesia business unit. The Director of Marketing and Communications for Hawai'i + Palmyra is an integral member of the overall Pacific Division Marketing & Communications (Pacific MAC) team, the Hawai'i + Palmyra leadership team, and will manage the 'on the ground' MAC activities in Hawai'i + Palmyra and Micronesia + Polynesia while expertly directing the many workflows that will arise in partnership with the Pacific MAC Creative Content, Campaigns and Audience Strategy, Events and Media teams. The Director of Marketing and Communications develops and implements an integrated, efficient and effective communications, media and engagement plan to help drive organizational strategy and engage 4 key audiences: (1) Donors (2) Legislators and Policymakers (3) Strategic and Community Partners and (4) Donor Prospects. They facilitate on-going communication between all parts of the globally dispersed marketing division and internal and external stakeholders, and identify communication and media needs and opportunities. They will work with senior executives to implement strategies that strengthen communications channels and develop and maintain engagement with our priority audiences. They develop and foster relations with key persons in selected media and manage the dissemination of media information. They manage communication strategies and program implementation for high profile and key audiences including the Board of Directors, state and country board of trustees, emeriti groups and forums, and executive leadership. The Director of Marketing and Communications provides consultation, media training, coaching and talking points to persons serving as spokesperson(s) including key stakeholders on the Hawai'i + Palmyra Management Team. They develop and implement crisis and change management communication strategies.

Requirements

  • Experience developing and executing integrated marketing and communications strategies across diverse platforms.
  • Knowledgeable and experienced in Hawaiian, Micronesian and Polynesian culture and norms.
  • Strong writing, editing, and storytelling skills tailored to different audiences and formats.
  • Multi-lingual skills appreciated, specifically a familiarity with Hawaiian language.
  • Multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience preferred.
  • Management experience including ability to motivate, lead, set objectives, manage performance and help with conflict resolution on a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Excellent communications, and presentation skills; ability to persuasively convey the mission of The Nature Conservancy to diverse groups including donors, board members and the public.
  • Proven ability to cultivate media relationships and manage press engagement.
  • Familiarity with communication technologies and best practices.
  • Experience and/or understanding of communication best practices at a decentralized organization.
  • Excellent communications, mediation and negotiation skills.
  • Experience fostering an environment of creativity and professional growth.
  • Demonstrated ability in planning and managing budgets.
  • Proficiency in digital marketing tools, analytics platforms, and content management systems.

Responsibilities

  • Designs, directs and manages multiple complex and diverse programs or projects coordinating the work of other professionals, managing budget and ensuring program accountability.
  • Broad management responsibility for administrative and professional staff that are responsible for key initiatives or programs.
  • Accountable for achievement of team business and professional development goals and objectives.
  • Directs and manages communication and media initiatives through collaboration with key stakeholders.
  • Responsible for a unified message in all Hawaii + Palmyra and Micronesia + Polynesia programs' external messages and all marketing and communications materials (e.g. newsletters, brochures, articles, and press releases).
  • Accountable for meeting strategic goals and objectives.
  • Financial responsibility includes developing and managing project/program/team budget objectives, evaluating results and developing corrective strategies as needed.
  • Provides input to departmental budget process.
  • Decisions can commit the organization's actions and resources in a way that affects public image and have program wide impact.
  • Opportunity to act independently within broad program goals.
  • Work checked through consultation and agreement with stakeholders rather by directives of superiors.
  • Supervise one or more administrative or professional staff.
  • Some occasional travel may be required.
  • Other related duties as assigned.
