About The Position

Join our leadership team and help shape the future of a high‑performing community hospital. The Director of Operations partners with the VP of Operations to drive daily operational excellence, strengthen patient and employee experience, and support key strategic initiatives. In this role, you’ll lead cross‑departmental operations, analyze clinical and business data to guide decisions, streamline processes, and ensure compliance with regulatory and quality standards. You’ll build strong relationships with physicians, staff, and patients, champion continuous improvement, and support service line growth and major campus projects. This position also oversees workforce development, including hiring, coaching, and performance management, while contributing to annual operating and capital planning. The primary work location will be at UPMC St. Margaret Hospital, but travel to other local sites may be required. The schedule for this position will be Monday through Friday 7am-4pm with some weekend or holiday coverage as needed. Ideal candidates bring strong leadership experience, exceptional communication skills, clinical and/or hospital experience, and a passion for improving care delivery in a dynamic healthcare environment.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in healthcare administration or related field required
  • 5 years of operational and/or clinical experience
  • 5 years in a progressive leadership level position.
  • Analytical ability necessary to evaluate staff, address and improve clinical and programmatic issues and devise solutions to complex problems.
  • Leadership ability to develop staff, establish and maintain standards of performance within a national context for professional nursing practice and comply with administrative requirements.
  • Superior interpersonal and communication skills sufficient to effectively create relationships to support a healing environment with patients, families, staff, physicians and hospital personnel including senior management in both written and verbal communication.

Responsibilities

  • Performs in accordance with system-wide competencies/behaviors.

  • Analyze clinical statistics and information to formulate conclusions and recommendations related to organizational operations.
  • Provide detailed analysis of projects related to both internal and external environments.
  • Provide support, preparation design of all correspondence and related documents to the VP of Operations.
  • Assist the Vice President in addressing Medical Staff concerns.
  • Assist the Vice President in implementing the management plan within the UPMC Health System.
  • Coordinate departmental activities to enhance integration and efficiency within the hospital system.
  • Coordinate hospital wide Essential Services Survey communication and leader rounding process.
  • Coordinates and handles special projects on behalf of the Vice President of the Hospital.
  • Develop an annual operating plan, operating budget and capital budget, which support the hospital's strategic plan.
  • Develop internal and external customer relationships (medical staff, employees, children and parents, payers). Identify customer needs, develop systems to monitor satisfaction and develop operating plans to address areas of dissatisfaction.

  • Establish a collaborative relationship between physicians, employees and managers to assure that issues are identified, evaluated and resolved as a team. Ensure effective communication channels between physicians, employees and managers.
  • Establish, in collaboration with physician department heads and managers, quality and service standards for the department(s). Develop systems to ensure that standards are maintained, and establish operating plans to address areas that do not meet standards.
  • Identify and define customer and market needs within the scope of departmental operations. Evaluate current services and develop business plans and operating objectives to define new services.

  • Implement tactics of UPMC Experience to enhance employee and patient experience via improving turnover, patient experience scores, targeted quality metrics, and financial stewardship.
  • Interview, hire and provide performance management to department employees. Mentor and evaluate performance for directors, managers and departmental staff. Establish development plans and support continuing education and training needs.
  • Manage departmental compliance with regulatory and accrediting agency standards, guidelines and quality assurance standards. Ensure that all quality control tests and procedures are performed and documented.
  • Participate in key strategic initiatives related to campus-wide construction projects and identify new business and service line growth opportunities.
