About The Position

The Director, Operational & System Safety (certificate Director of Safety) is primarily tasked with the development and implementation of the Safety Management System (SMS). The position reports directly to the Chief Safety Officer on all internal safety matters. Knowledge of aviation safety programs should include: Safety culture. The role of the director of safety as advisor to senior management officials. Safety philosophy. Safety data collection and analysis. Risk management. Incident/accident prevention and investigation. Human factors.

Requirements

  • Must have a valid driver's license and approved driving record, and successfully complete pre-employment background check.
  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s degree in Safety Management, Aviation Management, or a directly related field, PLUS three (3) years of work experience in developing and managing safety programs, of which one year is in a supervisory role related to the responsibilities of the position, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Responsibilities

  • Chairing safety meetings.
  • Maintaining the SMS online platform.
  • Develop and implement operational and system safety programs for all personnel to ensure a safe and healthful work environment.
  • Assist the Chief Safety Officer in reviewing the SMS system and its overall health annually, including but not limited to: a. Relevancy of the Safety Policy Statement. b. Relevancy of the SMS manual to current operations.
  • Create safety newsletters and disseminate it on a quarterly basis to all employees.
  • Speak with auditors and regulatory authorities regarding safety or quality assurance.
  • Performing annual internal evaluation plan (IEP) audits.
  • Processing general safety, change management, hazard, and incident reports for the purpose of: a. Identifying, eliminating, or mitigating risks. b. Preforming hazard assessments of recommended controls, and personal protective equipment. c. Identifying root causes of non-conformities, non-compliance, and other safety-related deficiencies/hazards. d. Advising management of recognized hazards and unsafe/unhealthful working conditions and the need for corrective action.
  • Assisting management, as necessary in the event of a governmental safety and/or health inspection, including mitigating regulatory action, whenever possible.
  • Assist management is implementing corrective/preventative actions, including recording, and following up on implementation to minimize the possibility of a recurrence and evaluate effectiveness.
  • Updating safety programs, as necessary, to maintain regulatory compliance.
