About The Position

The Director of Veterans Services is responsible for administering State and Federal Veterans Benefits to Wilbraham Veterans and their dependents. This role involves meeting with applicants, explaining available programs, completing applications, verifying eligibility, and maintaining confidentiality. The Director also organizes town events related to veterans and may supervise related roles such as the Burial Agent and Veterans Graves Officer.

Requirements

• Must be an honorably discharged US Military Veteran.
• Combination of education and experience in human services, social work, community outreach, family services, or counseling.
• Proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel.
• Ability to learn state computer applications related to Veterans programs.
• Excellent communication skills, including public speaking.
• Must attend mandatory Veterans Service Officer Training and become certified within 6 months of appointment.

Responsibilities

• Administer State Veterans Benefits in accordance with MGL Chapter 115 and Federal Veterans Benefits provided by the Veterans Administration.
• Meet with applicants to explain programs and assist with applications.
• Verify eligibility and documentation for benefits.
• Maintain confidentiality of applicants' information.
• Organize town events including Memorial and Veterans' Day commemorations.
• Supervise the Burial Agent and Veterans Graves Officer, overseeing flagging and marking of Veterans' graves in town cemeteries.
