About The Position

As our Director of Utilities, you will be the cornerstone of our utility strategy, serving as the company’s subject matter expert on water, wastewater, and electric/gas systems. This is a rare chance to architect a new department modeled after the rigor and reliability of a municipal public works operation. You will lead the full lifecycle of our utility assets—from daily operations and maintenance to long-term capital improvements—ensuring safe, reliable service for our residents while driving compliance and operational excellence across our portfolio.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil/Environmental Engineering, Utility Management, or a related field (Master’s preferred). Relevant professional certifications (e.g., PE license, Wastewater or Water Operator Certification) are highly desirable.
  • 10+ years of experience in utility infrastructure, public works, or municipal utility operations. You have deep technical expertise in water, wastewater, and electric/gas systems, with a proven track record in regulatory compliance and utility operations.
  • Demonstrated success in leading and developing teams, preferably in a utility or engineering environment. You are a self-starter with a talent for identifying needs, investigating solutions, and building the infrastructure to address them from the ground up.
  • Excellent project management and problem-solving skills, with the ability to listen and communicate effectively with both internal teams and external partners. You thrive in a collaborative environment and are skilled at working with a diverse group of employees to achieve shared goals.

Responsibilities

  • Build and Lead a World-Class Utilities Department
  • Establish and scale the Utilities Department, creating a foundation of excellence modeled on municipal utility standards.
  • Build and manage a premier network of utility contractors and service providers, vetting and selecting top-tier engineers, operators, and field specialists to uphold our commitment to safety, compliance, and performance.
  • Develop comprehensive standard operating procedures, maintenance schedules, and monitoring programs that ensure proactive and consistent utility management.
  • Drive Technical Operations and Asset Management
  • Serve as the company’s foremost utility expert for all water, wastewater, electric, and gas infrastructure.
  • Oversee the critical operations of wastewater treatment plants, wells, lift stations, and other essential utility assets, guaranteeing safe and reliable service delivery.
  • Implement robust asset management strategies focused on proactive maintenance, lifecycle planning, and system optimization to maximize performance and longevity.
  • Champion Regulatory Compliance and Safety
  • Ensure unwavering compliance with all federal, state, and local environmental and utility regulations.
  • Lead system performance monitoring, documentation, and reporting to meet stringent regulatory requirements.
  • Manage audits, inspections, and reporting for key agencies, including the EPA, state environmental departments, and utility commissions, maintaining our reputation for integrity and excellence.
  • Shape Strategic Planning and Capital Projects
  • Develop and execute long-term utility infrastructure plans, including system upgrades, expansions, and modernization initiatives.
  • Collaborate closely with capital projects and development teams on utility design, construction, and rehabilitation projects, ensuring seamless integration and quality outcomes.
  • Identify system risks and implement innovative solutions to mitigate operational disruptions and enhance resilience.
  • Foster Cross-Functional Collaboration
  • Partner with operations, asset management, and community teams to ensure seamless utility service delivery and exceptional resident experiences.
  • Provide expert support to community managers for troubleshooting and utility emergencies, serving as a trusted advisor and problem-solver.
  • Act as the company’s primary liaison with utility agencies, contractors, and vendors, building strong, productive relationships that benefit our communities.
