About The Position

SageSure is assisting one of its independent insurance carrier partner Valence. SageSure, a leader in catastrophe-exposed property insurance, is seeking a Director of Underwriting. As the Director of Underwriting, you will be responsible for overseeing the underwriting function led by the carriers’ managing general underwriter (MGU). You will play a pivotal role in ensuring that our underwriting leads to consistent, profitable growth. Your leadership will be essential in maintaining high standards of underwriting quality while driving continuous improvement initiatives to enhance our profitability. This is a hybrid position based in Sarasota, FL office or Jericho, NY.

Requirements

• 10+ years of experience in property and casualty underwriting, with a minimum of 5 years in a leadership role.
• Deep technical underwriting knowledge across personal and commercial lines of insurance.
• Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities, with the ability to assess complex risks and make data-driven decisions.
• Effective communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to collaborate across functions and influence outcomes.

Nice To Haves

• Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Finance, Risk Management, or related field
• Advanced degree or professional certifications (e.g., CPCU, AU, ARM)
• Specific experience in underwriting homeowners insurance in New York

Responsibilities

• Oversee underwriting strategies for multiple carriers with the goal of sustainable profitability.
• Oversee the evaluation of insurance applications for rescission and cancellation.
• Provide guidance on complex underwriting decisions, leveraging your expertise to optimize risk selection and profitability.
• Implement risk mitigation strategies and controls to minimize exposure and ensure underwriting integrity.
• Continuously evaluate underwriting processes and workflows, identifying opportunities for enhanced profitability.
• Develop and maintain relationships with key stakeholders.
• Oversee responses to consumer complaints.
• Audit MGU for compliance with underwriting statutes and regulations, as well as best practices.
• Collaborate with other departments to ensure that underwriting processes are integrated with other business functions.
