About The Position

The Director of Transportation is responsible for directing transportation services, providing information, serving as a resource to district administrators, and achieving defined objectives by planning, evaluating, and implementing services in compliance with district objectives. This position reports to the School Business Administrator and is crucial for ensuring the efficient operation of transportation services within the district.

Requirements

  • Associate's Degree in Business or related field.
  • Three years' supervisory experience in transportation operations, preferable with public school districts.
  • Valid driver's license and evidence of insurability; and CDL preferred.
  • Experience directing and managing operations of a large fleet of vehicles.
  • Knowledge of energy management and vehicle repair and maintenance.
  • Experience managing budget and personnel.
  • Experience interpreting data and implementing policies and procedures.
  • Able to work under limited supervision using standardized practices and/or methods.
  • Excellent communication skills, oral and written.
  • Excellent presentation skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Proficient with technology.
  • Able to pass the Criminal History Review.
  • Able to pass the Sexual Misconduct Child Abuse Disclosure.

  • Knowledge of Atlantic County's major roads, intersections, and neighborhood streets.
  • Knowledge of EHT bus routes as well as those of county and private schools.
  • Experience assessing road conditions for possible school closures.

Responsibilities

  • Directs department operations (e.g. budgeting, safety programs, site inspections, preventive maintenance, etc.) to provide services within established time frames.
  • Develops and monitors budget allocations, expenditures, fund balances and related financial activities.
  • Assesses incidents and complaints involving safety issues, transportation routes, legal issues, department staffing, etc. to resolve or recommend a resolution to the situation.
  • Performs personnel functions including but not limited to interviewing, evaluating, supervising, counseling, disciplining, directing, and training.
  • Inspects all aspects of District transportation services to ensure that transportation activities are completed efficiently and within regulatory requirements.
  • Oversees vehicle preventative maintenance programs and activities to ensure school vehicles are maintained in a safe and effective operating condition.
  • Prepares a wide variety of written materials including but not limited to bid specifications, correspondence, memos, reports, policy/procedures, and budget to document activities, provide written reference, and/or convey information.
  • Recommends policies, procedures, and/or actions related to transportation services to meet District goals and objectives.
  • Researches new equipment / vehicle, laws, regulations, etc. to recommend purchases, contracts and proper maintenance of district wide services.
  • Responds to emergency situations during and after standard hours to resolve immediate safety concerns.
  • Implements all federal, state, and local laws, as well as Board policies.
  • Enforces safety standards that comply with state, federal, and insurance regulations.
  • Develops a preventive safety program.
  • Develops training options and improvement plans to ensure exemplary operation of the transportation department.
  • Administers transportation budget and ensures that programs are cost-effective and that funds are managed wisely.
  • Initiates purchases and bids in accordance with budgetary limitations and district policies.
  • Maintains current inventory of supplies and parts to avoid ordering delays.
  • Approves and forwards invoices for transportation to the accounting department.
  • Recommends disposal of obsolete or worn-out vehicles and equipment; recommends purchases of vehicles as necessary.
  • Collaborates with building administrators on student behavior reports and conducts conferences with parents, students and drivers on disciplinary issues.
  • Prepares, processes and maintains all documents required to verify safety certification and alcohol and drug testing of bus drivers.
  • Advises administration about inclement weather conditions that may result in the closing of schools or road hazards.
  • Helps with gathering information in investigations of school bus accidents and student safety violations.
  • Helps organize and conduct training programs to promote a safe work environment.
  • Performs disaster duty as needed (hurricanes, earthquakes, blizzards, etc.).
  • Attends and makes presentations at conferences and school board meetings to discuss innovations and problems in transportation.
  • Attends professional growth activities to keep abreast of innovative techniques in transportation.
  • Maintains good rapport and pleasant disposition with parents and community.
  • Ability to conduct on-site inspections of all vehicle repair and maintenance operations.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Business Administrator or the Superintendent of Schools.
