About The Position

The Director of Transportation is responsible for the planning, organization, and supervision of all district transportation services. This position ensures the safe, efficient, and cost-effective transportation of students in compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations. The Director provides leadership for transportation staff, oversees routing and fleet operations, manages the department budget, and ensures all safety and operational standards are met.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in education, transportation management, business, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
  • Minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in pupil transportation or a related operational leadership role.
  • Demonstrated experience supervising staff and managing departmental operations.
  • Knowledge of school transportation regulations, safety practices, and routing principles.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in a public school district transportation department.
  • CDL with appropriate endorsements or ability to obtain within a specified timeframe.
  • Experience with transportation routing software and fleet management systems.
  • Knowledge of public sector bidding and procurement processes.

Responsibilities

  • Recruit, hire, train, supervise, and evaluate all transportation department staff, including drivers, safety coaches, mechanics, trainers, and support personnel.
  • Establish clear expectations, schedules, and performance standards for all transportation staff.
  • Provide ongoing coaching, professional development, and corrective action as necessary.
  • Ensure adequate staffing levels to meet daily operational needs and special transportation requests.
  • Oversee the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of all student transportation routes.
  • Ensure routes are efficient, safe, and responsive to enrollment changes and program needs.
  • Coordinate transportation for regular routes, special education, extracurricular activities, and special events.
  • Utilize routing software and data to improve efficiency and service delivery.
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local transportation regulations and district policies.
  • Oversee driver training, certification, licensing, and required safety training.
  • Implement and monitor safety programs, emergency procedures, and accident response protocols.
  • Review and investigate accidents and incidents; maintain required documentation and corrective actions.
  • Manage the transportation department budget.
  • Monitor expenditures to ensure fiscal responsibility and cost efficiency.
  • Prepare and manage fuel bids and other transportation-related contracts.
  • Analyze operational costs and recommend strategies for improved efficiency.
  • Oversee maintenance, repair, and inspection of all district transportation vehicles.
  • Ensure preventative maintenance schedules are followed and properly documented.
  • Maintain facilities and equipment in a safe and operational condition.
  • Organize and maintain all required transportation records and audit files.
  • Ensure accurate documentation for routes, mileage, driver qualifications, inspections, fuel usage, and training.
  • Assist the Chief Operations Officer in preparing reports for district administration, auditors, and regulatory agencies as required.
  • Serve as a liaison with district administrators, school staff, parents, and community partners regarding transportation matters.
  • Respond promptly and professionally to transportation concerns and service requests.
