About The Position

The Director of Translations will lead the translation of Tim Keller’s sermons and other Gospel in Life (GinL) content into multiple languages, ensuring theological fidelity, linguistic excellence, cultural sensitivity and operational scalability. This role combines editorial judgment, people leadership, and systems thinking while overseeing both in-house staff and a large network of professional freelance translators, reviewers and volunteers. This is a senior leadership role for someone with a deep understanding of linguistics, who has experience translating published material, manages both people and projects well, and is open to using technology (including AI) responsibly to help with efficiency. The Gospel in Life team operates on a hybrid working schedule. This role is required to be onsite at our Flatiron NYC office three days per week, usually Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in Translation, Linguistics, Theology, or a related field preferred
  • Experience in translating published works, ideally theological works
  • Experience in translation project management
  • Experience working with remote multilingual teams
  • Fluency in English and at least one additional language
  • Proficiency with AI translation tools and understanding of their strengths and limitations
  • Strong organizational and project management skills
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to work across diverse teams
  • Attention to detail and commitment to quality assurance

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the translation of Tim Keller’s sermons and related content into multiple languages
  • Establish and enforce translation standards that balance accuracy, theological faithfulness, clarity, and cultural appropriateness
  • Review and approve translations directly when needed while guiding language supervisors, reviewers and editors in quality control
  • Develop and maintain style guides, glossaries, and theological terminology standards across languages
  • Oversee the budget and forecasting for the Translations department, including staffing, contractors, software and marketing
  • Manage a small internal team of translation staff
  • Work with your team to recruit, onboard, and oversee dozens of freelance translators, editors, and reviewers worldwide
  • Assign work, set expectations, track performance, and provide feedback
  • Build clear workflows for translation, review, revision, and final approval
  • Proactively identify and vet freelance translation talent across priority languages
  • Evaluate translators not only for linguistic skill but also for theological literacy, judgment and experience
  • Coach your team on building long-term relationships with high-quality translators and reviewers
  • Verify all contractors and team members have a strong understanding of Tim Keller’s sermons and books.
  • Oversee and optimize translation workflows using translation management software (TMS)
  • Thoughtfully integrate AI-assisted translation tools into the process, ensuring human oversight and theological integrity
  • Stay updated on advancements in AI translation technology to optimize efficiency, and adopt new tools that prove beneficial to the process
  • Provide expertise and leadership in utilizing translation software tools and troubleshoot issues as needed
  • Work cross-functionally with editorial, fundraising and marketing teams
  • Work with GinL leadership and City to City Network leaders to prioritize languages, projects, and timelines based on strategic goals
  • Keep GinL leadership up to date on project progress, new languages and any issues that may come about
