About The Position

The Director of the Bates College Museum of Art is a full-time managerial position responsible for overseeing the museum's operations, programming, and community engagement. The role involves strategic planning, financial management, personnel management, and fostering inclusivity and accessibility within the museum. The successful candidate will lead initiatives to enhance the museum's role in the academic and local community, ensuring it serves as a vibrant cultural hub.

Requirements

  • M.A. degree required; Ph.D. preferred.
  • Extensive experience in museum administration, preferably in an academic setting.
  • 10+ years of experience in a leadership position in a museum or arts organization.
  • Commitment to equity and inclusion in a diverse community.
  • Excellent personnel and project management skills.
  • Proven experience with effective budget management and financial reporting.
  • Demonstrated strength in tactical and strategic planning.
  • Wide range of art knowledge and museum best practices.
  • Excellent writing and editing skills, including grant-writing and fundraising.
  • Excellent communication, presentation, and public speaking skills.

Responsibilities

  • Hires, manages, and evaluates professional staff.
  • Oversees supervision of hourly and temporary staff.
  • Develops plans and resources for project-based temporary staff.
  • Teaches and supervises student interns, emphasizing education and leadership skills.
  • Oversees development of exhibition programs, collections, and educational initiatives.
  • Maintains a multi-year schedule for exhibitions and participates in the Marsden Hartley Legacy Project.
  • Develops the operating budget and project budgets for exhibitions.
  • Undertakes long-range strategic planning for the museum.
  • Ensures the museum fosters a welcoming and inclusive environment for all visitors.
  • Develops and implements an inclusion and accessibility strategy.
  • Collaborates with community organizations to create diverse exhibitions and programs.
  • Leads efforts to integrate public art projects into the museum's programming.
  • Works with the Office of College Advancement to identify and cultivate donors.
  • Oversees the physical management of the museum and advocates for space development.
  • Cultivates relationships with faculty to enhance teaching and learning.
  • Directs all publicity and marketing for the museum.
  • Represents the museum among regional and national peer institutions.
