About The Position

The Director of Surgical Services is responsible for overseeing the surgical department, ensuring high-quality care, and managing staff effectively. This role involves working closely with Human Resources for hiring and disciplinary actions, coaching staff, and maintaining staffing patterns. The Director will also coordinate cross-training, monitor surgical care quality, and promote effective working relations to meet departmental goals. Additionally, the Director will lead strategic planning for surgical services, performance improvement initiatives, and collaborate with medical staff and other departments to ensure coordinated patient services.

Requirements

  • Active Michigan RN License - Required
  • BSN - Required
  • 3-5 years experience in a Surgical leadership position - Required
  • 24/7 accountability for the department.
  • Must be a team player able to work in a multi-disciplinary environment.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Exemplary attendance record.
  • Flexibility and positive attitude - Must.
  • Various work schedules - Required.
  • ACLS Certification - Required (3 month window offered to complete the certification class).

Responsibilities

  • Work in tandem with Human Resources - responsible for the hiring, disciplining and discharging of employees according to system policies.
  • Coach and counsel staff as needed.
  • Maintain staffing and scheduling patterns to provide coverage for the designated hours of operations.
  • Coordinate cross-training and orientation of all staff.
  • Monitor, evaluate, and act to improve the quality of surgical care rendered in the department of surgery.
  • Promote effective working relations and work effectively to meet the departments goals and objectives.
  • Plan, direct, supervise, coordinate and actively assist with the daily activities in the department within Surgical Services.
  • Assist medical staff leadership in terms of scale and scope of the surgical service.
  • Lead implementation of strategic plans for the future direction of surgical services in collaboration with leadership.
  • Lead performance improvement within the department and serve as department representative on interdisciplinary teams.
  • Lead the department as a multidisciplinary team leader in the development and review of policies, procedures, standards on behalf of the department.
  • Collaborate with physicians, management and other departments in planning for coordinated services for the patients.
  • Recommend departmental budget content and help to monitor expenses for compliance.
