Director of Student Success - School of Medicine The Director of Student Success provides strategic leadership and operational oversight for the Office of Student Progress within the BYU School of Medicine. This role is responsible for designing and implementing comprehensive academic support programs for MD students, supervising learning specialists, career advisors, and administrative staff, and ensuring high-quality services that promote student success. The Director will lead continuous quality improvement (CQI) initiatives, oversee career advising and MSPE preparation, and manage departmental resources to align with institutional goals and LCME accreditation standards. The Director also serves as the administrative leader for the Student Progress Committee (SPC), coordinating its processes and implementing decisions related to student promotion, remediation, probation, suspension, dismissal, and graduation. The position requires a collaborative leader who can integrate academic support into the medical curriculum, analyze student performance data, and develop evidence-based interventions for students at risk. The Director will serve as a key liaison between faculty, students, and external stakeholders, fostering an environment of excellence and innovation in medical education. This position plays a key role in ensuring academic and career advising within the School of Medicine aligns with the school’s mission to “provide a spiritually grounded and scientifically rigorous education for physicians who will minister to God’s children throughout the world as healers, teachers, researchers, leaders, and disciples of Jesus Christ.”

Requirements

Master’s degree in education, counseling, psychology, or a related field
At least 5 years of experience in academic support or student success programs within higher education
At least 3 years of supervisory or management experience
Leadership and team management skills, including staff development and performance evaluation
Expertise in adult learning theory and evidence-based academic support strategies
Ability to analyze and interpret student performance data for program improvement
Excellent organizational and workflow management skills
Excellent communication, interpersonal, and customer service skills
Proficiency with data management systems and Microsoft Office Suite
Knowledge of privacy regulations (e.g. FERPA)

Nice To Haves

Doctoral degree or graduate certificate in education, counseling, psychology, or related discipline
Experience in medical education or professional health programs
Prior involvement in LCME accreditation processes or CQI initiatives
Strong knowledge of medical education curriculum, best practices, and residency match processes
Certification in academic coaching or advising

Responsibilities

Leadership and Staff Management: Provide vision and leadership for the Office of Student Progress, ensuring alignment with institutional goals and LCME standards.
Supervise all staff within the Office of Student Progress, including learning specialists, career advisors, and administrative personnel.
Conduct regular performance evaluations, set goals, and create individualized development plans for team members.
Foster a collaborative, inclusive work environment that promotes professional growth and high-quality service delivery.
Manage departmental budgets, staffing plans, and resource allocation.
Establish policies and procedures for academic success programs, ensuring continuous quality improvement.
Lead CQI initiatives within the Office of Student Progress, including identifying process improvements, implementing best practices, and monitoring outcomes to ensure compliance with accreditation standards.
Collaborate with leadership to integrate CQI findings into strategic planning and operational enhancements.
Academic Support & Student Success Programs: Design and oversee evidence-based academic support services for MD students, including tutoring, workshops, and individualized learning plans.
Supervise and mentor learning specialists, ensuring professional development and high-quality service delivery.
Implement proactive interventions for students at academic risk, including remediation plans and board exam preparation strategies (USMLE).
Provide strategic leadership for all tutoring initiatives, including program planning, tutor recruitment, development, assessment, and resource allocation.
Develop resources and programming to enhance study skills, time management, and test-taking strategies.
Career Advising & MSPE Oversight: Oversee career advising services for medical students, ensuring alignment with residency match preparation.
Supervise administrative staff responsible for MSPE generation and ensure timely, accurate, and confidential preparation of student evaluations.
Develop programming for specialty selection, residency application strategies, and career development workshops.
Serve as liaison with faculty advisors and Student Success for integrated career planning.
Collaboration & Institutional Engagement: Work closely with the Associate Dean of Student Progress, course directors, and faculty to integrate academic support into the curriculum.
Manage and provide administrative leadership for the Student Progress Committee (SPC), including scheduling meetings, preparing agendas, ensuring documentation accuracy, and maintaining compliance with BYU School of Medicine bylaws and fair process policies.
Represent the School of Medicine at conferences and professional development events related to academic success and medical education.
Foster partnerships with external organizations and internal departments to enhance student support services.
Data Management, Assessment & Reporting: Collect and analyze data on student performance, retention, and program effectiveness to inform decision-making.
Prepare reports for accreditation (LCME), internal committees, and leadership on academic success outcomes.
Maintain systems for tracking student progress, board exam milestones, and advising interactions.
Ensure compliance with FERPA and institutional confidentiality standards.
Use CQI data to evaluate program effectiveness and recommend improvements.
