About The Position

The Director of Student Services is responsible for providing district-wide leadership to develop, achieve and maintain the best possible educational programs to meet the diverse learning needs of students with disabilities between the ages of three (3) and twenty two (22) years. It also includes leadership and supervision for special education staff, related service providers, contracted services and special education transportation. The Director is the District Section 504 coordinator, supports title IX coordination, and harassment and student civil rights officer. The position provides leadership and assistance to schools in planning designing and improving instructional programs.

Requirements

• Massachusetts DESE license as a Director of Special Education Administrator.
• Master's Degree in an appropriate field.
• Special Education background and/or related licensure and experience preferred.
• Knowledge of state and federal laws and requirements for Special Education and other Student Services.
• Successful completion of Criminal Records Check (CORI), and fingerprints.

Responsibilities

• Provide special education programming for students with disabilities within the district.
• Manage district special education contracted services, transportation, related services.
• Approve and manage the placement of students in out-of-district education placement programs.
• Write and submit all district grants related to special education.
• Provide supervision and evaluation of special education chairpersons and others as assigned.
• Review special education programming and services annually at each level to ensure appropriate programming.
• Procure services and write contracts for all contracted service providers.
• Assist in the supervision and hiring of professional staff and related service providers.
• Remain knowledgeable about all applicable federal and state laws, regulations and best practices in the area of special education.
• Ensure compliance with civil rights, special education, Section 504, and other related areas regulated by state and federal law.
• Responsible for representing the needs and developing, modifying and maintaining special education department programming of special education students at their level in a fiscally responsible manner.
• Coordinate program planning to maintain and develop on-site classrooms designed to meet the needs of special education students.
• Provide professional development opportunities for administrators, teachers and related service providers.
• Establish and maintain effective communication between Principal(s) and the special education department.
• Attend and represent the district as Director of Student Services in special education mediations, pre-hearings, and formal hearings through the Bureau of Special Education Appeals (BSEA).
• Inform and collaborate with the Superintendent and Business and Finance Administrator regarding budget, programming and special situations.
• Maintain effective communication and meet with Parent Advisory Council (SEPAC) on a regular basis.
• Facilitate summer services for students with special needs.
• Provide leadership and assistance to schools in planning, designing and improving instructional programs.
• Use data to make well informed decisions.
• Carries out other related duties as may be assigned by the Superintendent or their designee.
