About The Position

The Director of Software Engineering at the University of Maryland’s Applied Research Lab for Intelligence and Security (ARLIS) will play a pivotal role in advancing the lab’s research capabilities by providing robust software platforms for researchers to use for testing and evaluation. This position is also responsible for developing and maintaining IT infrastructure standards to be implemented by the ARLIS systems engineering team. The role requires a dynamic leader with extensive experience in enterprise systems engineering, cybersecurity, and IT operations. The Director will be responsible for overseeing the design, implementation, and maintenance of scalable, reliable, and secure systems that support the critical mission of ARLIS. In addition to technical expertise, the ideal candidate will be a strategic planner capable of aligning IT infrastructure with research objectives and operational priorities. This role demands collaboration with cross-functional teams to ensure the seamless integration of technology solutions that enhance research initiatives and meet compliance requirements.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science.
  • At least 10 years of experience in IT systems engineering and/or systems administration roles.
  • IT Business Analyst / Project Management Experience.
  • Strong background in network and information technology.
  • Experience in managing complex IT projects and leading technical teams for US Federal agencies.
  • Past or current experience with Systems Administration and Information Security knowledge roles.
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills.
  • Must be able to obtain a TS/SCI security clearance.

Nice To Haves

  • Certifications in IT management and security.
  • Prior or current membership with IT organizations like USENIX / ISC2 / SANS.
  • Prior experience in an intelligence, security, or defense research environment.
  • Experience with IT management in a research or academic setting.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in IT management.
