About The Position

The Director of Social Services may carry a small caseload, if necessary, and will assist the Program Director with administrative supervision and preparation of reports to DHS. She/He will supervise three (3) case management staff and will act as liaison between case management staff and will work in unification with the Operations Manager and the Residential Aids staff.  S/he will be required to do case management interventions with the case management staff and/or the residents of the program.  S/He will be responsible for all compliance standards of DHS requirements.   The Director of Social Services (DSS) is an integral part of the team providing support services to families at the New Broadway Family Shelter to promote housing readiness, family stability, wellness, recovery, and rehabilitation. Responsibilities are implemented within the framework of agency policy, professional ethics, legal scope of practice and regulatory guidelines. In addition, the DSS will work with the Housing Specialist for next-step housing needs for the residents of the shelter as directed by the Program Director.  The DSS will be responsible for ensuring that the case manager staff is in compliance with contract services requirements, maintaining a caseload that is in compliance with DHS Case Management Guidelines, are maintaining regular contact with residents and collaterals, and are ensuring that residents and collaterals are meeting program requirements.

Requirements

  • BA in related social service field and 2 years of relevant work experience or G.E.D. or High Diploma with 7+ years of relevant work experience.
  • A strong working knowledge/ background working with homeless families plus services rendered to the mentally ill and substance use populations.
  • Knowledge of DHS and entitlements for low income/homeless individuals in NYC
  • Basic computer literacy (e.g., Microsoft Word, e-mail, internet browsing, CARES).
  • Crisis management and de-escalation skills.
  • Familiarity with Motivational Interviewing and Harm Reduction.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct or arrange for appropriate orientations, in-services, and training for program staff
  • Actively participate in residents and program-related meetings and trainings
  • Ensure that Case Manager staff continually monitor and evaluate each client’s progress through their case management plan, developing corrective action revisions to the plan as needed; (CASE FILE REVIEWS)
  • Maintain client related data systems (CARES) up to date, including case notes, supervisory reviews, and physical charts
  • Prepare case management related reports including but not limited to: outcomes, successes, etc.
  • Monitor clients’ progress through scheduled office visits, unit inspections, phone contact as well as anticipating and dealing with crisis situations.
  • Participate in weekly supervision with Program Director; attend weekly interdisciplinary team meetings, monthly agency staff meetings, and other internal staff meetings as required. Develop skills and increase knowledge as provided by training and other educational tools.
  • Mediate residents’ grievances and facilitate case management/resident issues; (CASE CONFERENCES)
  • Adhere to strict boundaries and professional ethics in the care of the families and children being serviced and with supervision and interaction with staff.
  • Ensure that Case Management Staff are working in conjunction with the clinical staff to ensure the families are receiving appropriate referrals for families’ needs and services
  • The Case Manager Supervisor is expected to perform any other duties as assigned.
  • Attend divisional housing meetings, weekly staff meetings, quarterly agency meetings, and other internal staff meetings as required.
  • Attend and/or coordinate case conferences with other providers.
