About The Position

Purpose of Position: To create a safe, healthy, and positive working environment at the Business Unit level for all Foster Farms’ team members. Responsible for the Prepared Foods Business Unit compliance with local, state, federal and corporate regulations pertaining to health and safety concerns (HS). Developing, implementing, and managing all H&S policies and procedures. Support Prepared Foods Business Unit with managing incident investigations, tracking H&S metrics, workplace inspections, and recommending program modification or corrective actions pertaining to H&S issues at a division level. This position provides safety leadership and strategic direction by leading the operations’ safety continuous improvement efforts at the division level. The Director of Safety will support and advise management on safety systems and compliance.

Requirements

  • Preferred B.S./B.A. degree in safety or related field (ASP or CSP Preferred).
  • Must have a minimum of seven years of professional experience in planning, developing, implementing and ensuring compliance with health and safety system programs and environmental programs in a food manufacturing environment. Poultry experience is preferred.
  • Education and experience must clearly indicate the existence of specialized knowledge in critical health & safety programs and functions, such as medical management, behavioral safety process, facility auditing, incident investigation, and employee safety committees.
  • Knowledge of Cal/OSHA, Fed/OSHA and UFC rules and standards.
  • Must demonstrate good interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills with the ability to read, write and understand English; Bilingual English/Spanish or English/Punjabi preferred.
  • Specialized knowledge in critical health and safety programs and functions (medical management, behavioral safety process, facility auditing, incident investigation, employee safety committees, property conservation, hearing conservation, confined spaces, hazard communication, respiratory protection, ergonomics, industrial hygiene, electrical safety, lockout/tagout, emergency response planning, process safety management and risk management plans.
  • Must be able to work in both individual and teamwork settings with minimum supervision.
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Office applications, as well as health and safety network information systems.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from Business Partners.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
  • Ability to travel and support safety efforts at other Foster Farms facilities, when called upon.
  • Must be able to work varying shifts in varying environments including wet, cold and hot environments and must have regular attendance; must be able to occasionally audit/train on 2nd and 3rd shifts.
  • Must be able to stand on the production floor for varying amount of times with or without accommodations.

Responsibilities

  • Have indirect reporting for multi-site safety teams
  • Develop, implement, and enforce governing safety and health policies and procedures and conduct incident investigations to ensure “root cause(s)” have been identified and that appropriate corrective action has been completed by the corresponding site.
  • Provide strategic guidance and coaching to the Prepared Foods Business Unit Safety Team.
  • Mentor Safety Team, team members, and management to develop a positive safety culture throughout the complex.
  • Maintain and analyze safety related data to develop trends and action plans.
  • Prepare and deliver reports for management and guide safety committees.
  • Perform safety audits and inspections of the Prepared Foods Business Unit operations, as well as track findings and assign corrective actions to ensure closure.
  • Prepare and deliver selected H&S trainings and programs to ensure compliance with local and federal regulations.
  • Assist the Environmental Department when needed, enforce and monitor compliance with environmental programs for the facility; programs include Air Quality, Pesticide, Hazardous Material, Hazardous Waste, Industrial Wastewater and Drinking Water & Storm Water Programs
  • Inspect equipment, working conditions, and maintain OSHA files and supporting documents required by municipal, State and Federal regulations. Report any potential violations and recommend corrections, as needed.
  • Communicates safety procedure changes to Business Partners through several conduits including staff meetings, safety huddles, postings, and interpersonal communication.
  • Ensures all health safety policies, procedures, and practices are reviewed on an annual basis or as changes and updates are required by practices or regulation and are rolled-out in a timely manner.
  • Follow and abide by Foster Farms Corporate requirements or mandates.
  • Reviews all safety documents, policies, procedures, and incident reports. Drive change through developing corrective actions related to root cause, indirect cause, and direct cause, as well as providing training on corrective actions to affected Team members.
  • Support investigations of all safety-related incident reviews and incident reports and completes necessary reports for safety management system, corporate safety office and support workers compensation efforts.
  • Maintain in-depth knowledge and continuous development of existing and proposed federal and state specific safety and legal regulations.
  • Perform accurate record keeping and gather statistics in compliance with governmental regulations and/or company needs, utilizing company computer and/or manual systems. Includes records of training drills, audit inspections, certifications, procedures, permits, communication with external agencies and any other documents required by governmental regulations.
  • Serve as an additional point-of-contact for external safety and/or environmental auditors/inspectors. Participate in external audits/inspections in conjunction with the HS Management.
  • Assist with contacting vendors to coordinate/arrange outside services related to environmental or safety regulations and/or industrial hygiene, such as audiometric testing, thermographic testing, hazardous waste disposal, water testing, fire protection system services, etc.
  • Assist with generation of weekly and monthly safety reports and forward to Corporate Management for review.
  • Assist with review and updates of written Job Safety Analysis for all positions, as necessary.
  • Assist with periodic reviews and assessments of Personal Protective Equipment and make any necessary recommendations.
  • Comply with all company policies and procedures including safety rules and Good Manufacturing Practices.
