About The Position

Job Summary: Music is an integral part of the life of St. Louis King of France Catholic Church and School and serves as an integral ministry that reaches out to parishioners and staff creating opportunities for our community to be meaningfully engaged with the Church through music. The Director of Sacred Music (DSM) is responsible for the overall formation and execution of the music program of the parish, including all choirs, singers (paid and volunteer), instrumentalists (paid and volunteer), programs, concerts, and music events. The DSM will provide for a high level of excellence in music at all parish liturgies for which s/he is responsible. Ministerial Character The Pastor is the visible principle and foundation of unity in the parish (St. Louis King of France Catholic Church and School – Austin, Texas) which the Bishop has entrusted to him. He makes Christ’s mission present and enduring in the parish. In order to fulfill his mission, the Pastor employs suitable, chosen collaborators (clerics, religious, or lay people). He shares with them his mission and entrusts various responsibilities to them. Positions employed at St. Louis King of France Catholic Church and School – Austin, Texas help to extend the ministry of the Pastor in particular ways as outlined in the job description. Therefore, the employee in this position is closely connected to, and assists the Pastor in, the performance of his ministry and thereby engages in ministry for the Church.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of the structure and basic teachings of the Roman Catholic Church.
  • Knowledge of Catholic sacred music.
  • Proficiency in working with (but not limited to) the following programs: Gmail, Office Suite (Excel, Powerpoint, Publisher, Word, etc), Google Drive, Google Calendar, Adobe InDesign, and any respective accompanying mobile apps.
  • Proficiency in notation software (e.g. Finale, Sibelius, Dorico)
  • Proficiency in verbal, non-verbal communication, written composition, and active listening skills.
  • Ability and interest in working as a positive team member with colleagues and members of the church community.
  • Ability to work effectively with staff, clergy, religious and laity.
  • Ability to organize, prioritize, and utilize effective time management techniques.
  • Ability to follow instructions furnished in verbal or written format.
  • Ability to proficiently communicate in English (conversing, reading, and writing).
  • Master’s degree in music, preferably in Choral Conducting
  • 3-5 years experience leading a liturgical music ministry program, preferably Catholic
  • 3-5 years experience in management of staff and volunteers
  • Valid Texas driver’s license.
  • Must maintain compliance with the Diocese of Austin Virtus program and policies throughout the employment period.

Responsibilities

  • Integral team member in planning all masses, including hymns, psalmody, acclamations, choral anthems, and other service music, and coordination with other ministry leaders
  • Oversee the creation of worship aids for standard weekend liturgies (masses and Vespers), as well as for any solemnities, feast days, or other parish liturgies/events for which aids are necessary for congregational participation
  • Lead worship music via choral ensembles at masses, scheduling and preparing ensembles, accompanists, and cantors
  • Plan, coordinate, rehearse, and lead a weekly sung Vespers service, and transcribe any psalms, responsories, and other service music (in digital notation software) which are to be sung in the service
  • Supervise and consult with all ensembles (Children’s Choir, Handbell Choir, Spanish-language choirs, etc.) to ensure their leadership and accompanying needs are provided and successful
  • Coordinate with liturgical staff for planning of all weddings and funerals, assisting couples with music selection, sourcing music for worship aids, and engaging outside musicians as required
  • Collaborate with Vacation Bible School leadership (Youth Minister and lay leaders), to ensure music is taught to child participants in daily segments and provided at end-of-week Mass annually
  • Develop and manage the Music Ministry budget including the payroll for contracted musicians, check requests for maintenance, payments to any outside musicians for special celebrations or vacation coverage, scores and other materials, and all other expenses in coordination with the COO/finance office
  • Recruit volunteer(s) for involvement in all aspects of Music Ministry, including administrative and logistical needs, in addition to musical involvement
  • Developing the Friends of the King’s Music Concert Series, and other special musical and concert needs, coordinating with related ministries, networking with artists, and development
  • Collaborate with the music teacher/leader of music for St. Louis Catholic School to ensure music is planned and executed thoughtfully for all school liturgical celebrations, including weekly masses
  • Execute joint masterwork performances with other local church choirs, international choral pilgrimages
  • Maintain a focus on the Parish Mission in all service to the church, and form ministry leaders in the Mission: Our mission is to unite God’s people in the sacraments, steward his generosity, and evangelize the community.
  • Other duties as assigned to sustain and grow the music ministry, in collaboration with the Pastor
