About The Position

The Huntsville Regional Medical Campus at the University of Alabama at Birmingham Heersink School of Medicine seeks a Family Medicine physician to serve as a full-time, non-tenure earning, Assistant, Associate or Professor and as the Director of Rural Medicine. The successful candidate will have a minimum of three (3) years of experience as a board-certified family medicine physician, ideally in a rural setting or with a practice caring for a rural population. The position provides an extremely varied and exciting combination of duties including precepting and teaching of family medicine residents and medical students, recruiting and mentoring of rural students from Alabama, collaborating with regional rural family physicians as well as with the Rural Health Board of Alabama, advocating for rural medicine with Alabama legislators, and close interaction with colleagues in similar roles on the Tuscaloosa and Auburn campuses. Building one’s own faculty clinical practice is also encouraged. As Director of Rural Medicine, the successful candidate will lead the Rural Medicine Program, a five-year program that includes a pre-matriculation year at Auburn University and four years of medical school at UAB with clinical training on the Huntsville Campus. The ideal candidate will have a love for teaching and for serving as a role model of providing care for people of all backgrounds, especially the underserved. The UAB Huntsville Campus continues to grow and currently provides the clinical training for 70 junior and senior medical students in addition to three residency programs in Family Medicine, Internal Medicine and Psychiatry. The site has full-time faculty staffing busy clinics in Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Pediatrics and Psychiatry. The selected candidate will report directly to the Regional Dean, Dr. Roger Smalligan. UAB offers competitive salary and excellent benefits. Requirements

  • Must have MD/DO degree
  • be board certified/eligible in Family Medicine
  • qualify for Alabama licensure
  • Experience in primary and rural health
  • Strong commitment to service and teaching with participation in research and scholarly activity
