About The Position

The Rural Health Group Director of Risk Management is responsible for overseeing and coordinating all aspects of risk management, with a focus on managing general liability and risk exposure. This role is pivotal in advancing health outcomes, enhancing patient safety, and minimizing errors within healthcare processes. The Director of Risk Management plays a crucial role in safeguarding the organization and ensuring the highest standards of patient care and safety. This position requires a proactive approach to identifying and mitigating risks, as well as an unwavering commitment to compliance and continuous improvement. RHG is a premier provider of community-based healthcare in northeastern NC and a designated federally qualified health center (FQHC). We provide high quality culturally and linguistically appropriate services to diverse and low-income populations through a myriad of clinical, medical, mental health, education and support services. We provide integrated behavioral health services to underserved patients currently receiving primary care, using a team-based, brief intervention approach. Requirements

  • In-depth understanding of risk management principles and legal components with proven experience in managing healthcare-related risk management processes

  • Job-specific Skill Set
  • Bachelor's degree required with a minimum of 5 years of experience in a healthcare setting, with master's degree and/or risk management certification
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Compliance with all applicable laws and cooperation with the Rural Health Group, Inc corporate compliance program
  • Proven management ability and experience including a thorough understanding of quality improvement (QI) processes, tools, techniques; quality measurement and reporting; root cause analysis and preventive risk management strategies; accrediting bodies' standards; and state and federal regulations
  • Ability to function effectively, independently, and efficiently iin a stressful and dynamic work environment. Must be able to take initiative, handle high volume and multiple tasks.
  • Able to organize complex information, electronic and paper systems.
  • Must be highly organized and detailed oriented.
  • Recognizes and analyzes problems; trend analysis. Able to make difficult choices under uncertain conditions.
  • Demonstrates good judgment.
  • Possess knowledge of modern office equipment, Microsoft Office software programs and electronic health record.

  • Valid NC Driver’s License, auto insurance, willing to accept travel assignments as needed
  • Physical demands : Ability to stoop, kneel, bend, use computer keyboard and perform light lifting. Ability to sit for long periods of time. Moderate physical activity such as walking, traveling, and driving.

Responsibilities

  • Risk and Claims Management: Lead the management of claims, conducting investigations into potentially compensable events involving patients, visitors, and employees. Address complaints, near misses, sentinel events, and preventable adverse events.
  • Incident Response and Analysis: Implement immediate and appropriate responses to serious occurrences or complaints. Conduct root cause analysis and failure mode and effects analysis to identify improvement opportunities.
  • Reporting and Compliance: Promote incident reporting processes, trend analysis, and problem area identification. Ensure compliance with internal policies and external regulations, including HIPAA and FTCA.
  • Legal and Regulatory Liaison: Act as the primary liaison for legal matters, coordinating with outside counsel on litigation processes. Ensure compliance with FTCA regulations to maintain eligibility and manage legal exposures.
  • Policy Development and Review: Evaluate and revise risk management policies and procedures in line with state and federal regulations. Develop new policies as necessary.
  • Collaboration and Communication: Work closely with clinical leadership, the Quality Improvement Department, and other stakeholders on patient care enhancements and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Training and Education: Coordinate risk management training and activities, ensuring credentialing and privileging align with FTCA/DHHS requirements.
  • Reporting and Documentation: Prepare and present detailed reports to leadership and the Board of Directors on serious incidents and risk-related issues. Develop statistical and qualitative reports on risk management trends.
  • Relationship Management: Build and maintain strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders to enhance communication regarding risk and safety.
  • Customer Service and Teamwork: Provide superior customer service and support a team-oriented environment, fostering collaboration and productive team behavior.
