About The Position

The Director of Public Services is responsible for overseeing various municipal activities including sanitation, street maintenance, traffic management, and engineering. This role involves planning, organizing, and directing the work of multiple departments, providing technical advice to the Assistant Town Manager, and ensuring efficient practices are utilized by municipal work crews. The position also includes contract management, budget administration, and personnel management, while representing the Town in various interactions with citizens and regulatory officials.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in civil or environmental engineering from an accredited college or university.
• Seven to ten years of experience in a responsible management position in municipal engineering, public works, or environmental resources.
• Registration as a Professional Engineer in North Carolina or another state.
• Possession of a valid North Carolina driver's license.

Responsibilities

• Plan, organize, and direct the work of departments engaged in municipal projects.
• Provide technical advice and assistance to the Assistant Town Manager in long-range planning and infrastructure improvements.
• Manage hiring, promotion, training, discipline, and evaluations of personnel.
• Coordinate activities of streets, sanitation, traffic, and engineering staff with other departments.
• Research and recommend long-range plans and operational changes to meet municipal service needs.
• Analyze personnel, equipment, and operations to improve departmental efficiency.
• Oversee the maintenance and administration of the Public Services GIS system.
• Attend Town Board meetings to represent the departments and coordinate projects with other departments.
• Review and prepare departmental operating and capital budgets; monitor expenditures.
• Implement changes in regulations related to solid waste disposal and recycling.
