About The Position

The Director of Psychiatry provides clinical and administrative oversight to the adult and pediatric psychiatry programs in DC & Maryland within Mary’s Center’s Department of Behavioral Health. The Director of Psychiatry provides clinical leadership for the program and ensures compliance with clinical requirements identified by payors, including the District of Columbia’s Department of Behavioral Health Core Service Agency (CSA), MCOs, and private payors, as well as the Council on Accreditation Mental Health and Substance Use (MHSU) standards. This includes ensuring compliance with policies and procedures, training recommendations, and other areas that ensure the highest quality of care and clinical interventions. The Director of Psychiatry is responsible for achieving the budgeted encounter targets and designs methods that monitor the clinical schedules of assigned staff to ensure that the program appointment schedules are full and that service delivery occurs seamlessly. The Director of Psychiatry will also carry a caseload of about 12-15 encounters per week. This position is .6 FTE Reportability This position will report directly to the Vice President of Behavioral Health. This position will manage/supervise a team of psychiatrists and psychiatric nurse practitioners and indirectly supervise all fellows.

Requirements

  • Must possess an N.P., M.D., or D.O. and be Board-Certified in Psychiatry or Board-Eligible.
  • Must have current unrestricted licenses to practice in the District of Columbia and Maryland.
  • At least 5 years’ experience practicing medicine in a community mental health environment and/or experience in working with immigrant or low-income populations is desirable.
  • Supervisory experience strongly preferred.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English is required.

  • Additional language proficiency or fluency in Spanish is strongly preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provide individual administrative and clinical supervision.
  • Provide oversight to psychiatrists, psychiatry NPs, and fellows on all aspects of service delivery in DC & MD.
  • Ensure all clinical documentation is timely and high quality.
  • Develop and implement peer review processes & workflows for Quality assurance.
  • Support behavioral health quality initiatives, including prescribing practices and patient safety.
  • Advise on behavioral health strategy and opportunities to strengthen coordination with Primary Care and Substance Use Disorder (SUD) Services.
  • Provide recommendations on workflows and clinical processes to improve safety, quality, and efficiency.
  • Participate in hiring process and onboard and orient new staff and students.
  • Continually monitor quality service delivery and provide ongoing constructive feedback to supervisees to support professional growth .
  • Ensure appropriate documentation of all supervision meetings and maintain supervisory agreements with all supervisees.
  • Complete annual performance evaluations and if needed establish performance improvement plans designed to coach assigned employees to improved performance.
  • Contribute to the development of training topics for clinical staff annually and provide information that supports conducting the trainings throughout the year.
  • Coordinate, facilitate, and participate in weekly clinic meetings, quarterly psychiatry meetings and case reviews.
  • Ensure staff meet required productivity standards.
  • Participate in organization-wide and division-wide meetings and committees, departmental meetings and other meetings/conferences as assigned.
  • Demonstrate cultural competency and support development of cultural competency in staff through appropriate trainings and other activities as needed.
  • Ensure staff maintain their CME requirements for their license level and to enhance their continued professional growth.
  • Maintain statistics and provide reports as requested.
  • Understand and apply state and federal confidentiality regulations with regard to clients’ records and correspondence.
  • Evaluate, diagnose, and treat psychiatric, emotional, or behavioral conditions including personality disorders, suicidality, psychosis, mood disorders, anxiety disorders, substance use disorders, developmental disorders, sexual dysfunctions, attention deficit disorder, trauma- and stressor-related disorders, eating disorders, adjustment disorders, and others.
  • Establish a differential diagnosis and treatment plan.
  • Prescribe, direct, or administer psychotherapeutic treatment or medications to treat mental health conditions.
  • Monitor medication side effects and medication interactions.
  • Order and interpret results of laboratory diagnostic testing.
  • Order and interpret psychological testing.
  • Provide psychoeducation to patients and/or relatives about diagnosis, prognosis, treatment indications, risks, benefits, and alternative treatment options.
  • Collaborate with members of the multidisciplinary team, including therapists and family support workers, including providing case consultation and participating in case reviews.
  • Provide services to a minimum of 12 participants per week.
  • Provide consultation as needed to primary care providers on patients receiving medical care at Mary's Center.
  • Participate in Mary's Center Continuous Quality Improvement process.
  • Document all services provided to clients and collateral contacts (family, school, doctor, etc.) in eCW electronic medical record.
  • Perform other services determined as necessary by Vice President of Behavioral Health.
