About The Position

Ontario County is looking for qualified applicants to fill full-time the Director of Planning position in the Planning Department. 2026 Starting Salary: $121,299/yr QUALIFICATIONS: County Values: All employees of Ontario County are expected to uphold and exhibit the County’s shared values and behaviors to achieve the County’s Vision and Mission. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Either: Possession of a Master's Degree in Planning, Civil Engineering, Urban Geography, Landscape Architecture, Environmental Studies, Public Administration, Transportation and Transit Planning and Analysis or a closing related field to Planning, AND six (6) years of full-time paid professional work experience, or its part-time equivalent, in municipal, community, regional or transportation planning, development or redevelopment in a public sector agency, at least three (3) years of which must have been in a management or supervisory capacity; OR Possession of a Bachelor's Degree in Planning, Civil Engineering, Urban Geography, Landscape Architecture, Environmental Studies, Public Administration, Transportation and Transit Planning and Analysis or a closing related field to Planning, AND seven (7) years of full-time paid professional work experience, or its part-time equivalent, in municipal, community, regional or transportation planning, development or redevelopment in public sector agency, at least three (3) years of which must have been in a management or supervisory capacity; OR Eleven (11) years of full-time paid paraprofessional or professional administrative work experience, or its part-time equivalent, in planning, civil engineering, urban geography, landscape architecture, environmental studies, public administration, transportation and transit planning and analysis or a closing related field to planning, at least eight (8) years of which must have been professional level work experience in community planning development or redevelopment in a public sector agency, at least three (3) years of which must have been in a management or supervisory capacity; OR An equivalent combination of experience and training as defined by the limits of (1), (2) and (3) above. NOTE: Community planning, development, or redevelopment in a public sector agency includes but is not limited to planning and related analyses with respect to land use, zoning, transportation, housing, economic development, the environment, and urban design. NOTE: There is no substitution for the three years of management or supervisory experience. SPECIAL NOTE: EDUCATION: Your degree must have been awarded by a college or university accredited by a regional, national, or specialized agency recognized as an accrediting agency by the U.S. Department of Education/U.S. Secretary of Education. If your degree was awarded by an educational institution outside the United States and its territories, you must provide independent verification of equivalency. SPECIAL REQUIREMENT FOR APPOINTMENT: Possession of a valid New York State Operator's license at the time of appointment, and maintenance of such license throughout the tenure of employment in the position.

Requirements

  • Eleven (11) years of full-time paid paraprofessional or professional administrative work experience, or its part-time equivalent, in planning, civil engineering, urban geography, landscape architecture, environmental studies, public administration, transportation and transit planning and analysis or a closing related field to planning, at least eight (8) years of which must have been professional level work experience in community planning development or redevelopment in a public sector agency, at least three (3) years of which must have been in a management or supervisory capacity
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training as defined by the limits of (1), (2) and (3) above
  • Possession of a valid New York State Operator's license at the time of appointment, and maintenance of such license throughout the tenure of employment in the position
