We are currently looking for a Director of Philanthropy who provides strategic and operational leadership for Hospice of the Chesapeake’s comprehensive fundraising program, with primary responsibility for major gifts, moves management, grants, and fundraising operations. Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree required; CFRE or equivalent professional certification preferred.
  • Minimum of 7–10 years of progressive fundraising experience, including significant leadership in major gifts and/or healthcare philanthropy.
  • Demonstrated success securing major gifts and managing complex donor portfolios.
  • Proven experience supervising and developing fundraising staff across multiple functions (major gifts, grants, operations).
  • Strong working knowledge of grants development, donor databases, and fundraising operations.
  • Exceptional relationship-building, communication, and presentation skills.
  • Ability to travel within the organization’s geographic service area and attend occasional evenings and weekends.
  • Deep expertise in relationship-based fundraising and moves management.
  • Strong leadership and coaching skills with the ability to build high-performing teams.
  • Strategic thinker with strong analytical skills and comfort using data to drive decisions.
  • High level of discretion and professionalism in handling sensitive donor and organizational information.
  • Proficiency with fundraising CRMs (Blackbaud Raiser’s Edge preferred) and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Mission-driven, collaborative, and adaptable in a fast-paced healthcare environment.
  • Must maintain a valid driver’s license and a good driving record.
  • Requires regular travel throughout territory covered.
  • Compliant with health screening and vaccination requirements of organization and position, including Influenza vaccination annually.

Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership and accountability for all philanthropy functions, including major gifts, grants, donor stewardship, and fundraising operations.
  • Develop and execute a comprehensive fundraising strategy aligned with organizational priorities and long-term sustainability.
  • Establish annual and multi-year fundraising goals, metrics, and forecasts in partnership with the Executive Director.
  • Lead and continuously refine a disciplined moves management program for all major gift prospects and donors.
  • Manage a personal portfolio of high-capacity donors while coaching and mentoring Donor Engagement Managers to meet performance goals.
  • Ensure consistent use of donor strategies, contact plans, proposal development, and stewardship across the major gifts team.
  • Oversee prospect identification, qualification, and portfolio assignment to maintain a healthy and advancing donor pipeline.
  • Provide strategic oversight of the grants program, including foundation, corporate, and government funding.
  • Supervise grants staff and ensure timely, high-quality proposals, reports, and compliance with funder requirements.
  • Align grant seeking with organizational priorities, programmatic needs, and long-term funding strategy.
  • Collaborate with finance, program, and clinical leaders to ensure accurate budgeting, reporting, and impact measurement.
  • Oversee fundraising operations, including donor database management, gift processing, acknowledgments, reporting, and reconciliation.
  • Ensure data integrity and best-practice use of Blackbaud Raiser’s Edge across the philanthropy team.
  • Lead and develop the database and gift processing team to ensure timely, accurate, and donor-centered execution of gifts.
  • Ensure an exceptional donor experience through intentional stewardship strategies, recognition, and meaningful engagement opportunities.
  • Collaborate with the Sr. Donor Engagement and Communications Manager to develop compelling cases for support and demonstrate donor impact.
  • Collaborate with Donor Engagement and Event Specialist to leverage signature events for donor cultivation and engagement.
  • Represent Hospice of the Chesapeake at donor meetings, community events, and fundraising initiatives.
  • Provide regular pipeline, revenue, and performance reports to the Executive Director, CEO, and Board committees.
  • Use data and analytics to inform strategy, monitor progress, and continuously improve fundraising effectiveness.
  • Ensure compliance with ethical fundraising standards, donor intent, and organizational policies.
