About The Position

The Director of OTTAVA Software will lead their team in the software design, development, and documentation to build a scalable robotic surgical business impacting millions of patients and expanding the capabilities of physicians globally. At Johnson & Johnson Robotics and Digital Solutions, we're changing the trajectory of health for humanity, using robotics to enhance healthcare providers’ abilities and improve diagnoses, treatments, and recovery times for patients. Johnson & Johnson Robotics was established in 2020 with the integration of Auris Health, Verb Surgical, C-SATS, and Ethicon. It comprises three key med-tech platforms: Flexible Robotics (MONARCH®), Surgical Robotics (OTTAVA™) and Digital Solutions. Join our collaborative, rapidly growing teams based in the San Francisco Bay Area (Santa Clara), Cincinnati, and Seattle. You'll collaborate on breakthrough medical technologies that unite multiple subject areas to build a connected digital ecosystem that advances medical professionals’ skills and improves patient outcomes. This director will be a key technical and strategic leader on one of the most exciting programs in J&J and in healthcare in general! The candidate must bring a strong blend of technical ability and people leadership to bear on this critical role. They must also balance depth in software development with a passionate focus on understanding and meeting the needs of clinicians and operating room staff.

Requirements

  • A minimum of Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or equivalent experience is required
  • 10+ years professional experience in software development, and/or data platforms, or similar, is required
  • 5+ years experience with hands-on technical leadership and people management is required
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver results on time within constraints by creatively adapting processes and using resources is required
  • Experience with medical devices from concept to delivery is required
  • Experience with documentation for medical device and non-medical device software is required
  • Proficiency in software development for medical devices and IEC 62304 is required
  • Demonstrated success in partnering and influencing across a matrix environment is required.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with diverse teams and partners is required
  • Ability to travel up to 10%, international and domestic, is required

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience successfully supporting or launching medical device products is preferred
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively recruit, develop, manage and coach associates (including manager level talent) to strengthen organizational capabilities is highly preferred
  • Experience reaching “across the aisle” to successfully partner with and problem solve alongside technical, support and business partners in other parts of the company.
  • Experience with software development and/or test for complex electro-mechanical systems
  • Understanding of robotic technology and general robotic surgery paradigms
  • Experience with a global development team
  • Experience bringing products to market

Responsibilities

  • Lead and motivate a global software development team of over 55 managers and individual contributors focused on graphical user interfaces, applications, real-time software, and firmware
  • Establish team initiatives to achieve program goals and improve functional excellence in areas including data engineering and device software development related to graphical user interfaces, robotics and controls, firmware, and cybersecurity
  • Demonstrate technical leadership across product software development, ensuring the stability, robustness, and feature set of the OTTAVA software
  • Define, and communicate, and implement the vision for the mid- to long-term strategic and technical roadmap of the team
  • Mentor senior managers, managers, and individual contributors
  • Maintain functional alignment within R&D leadership and partner organizations (Quality, Regulatory, Commercial) to improve process and define feature road maps
  • Lead in innovation and AI-supported development
