About The Position

The Director of Optometry is a pivotal role within our organization, requiring a blend of clinical excellence, leadership acumen, and operational expertise. This individual will be responsible for steering our team of Optometrists towards excellence in patient care, operational efficiency, and financial success, while providing extraordinary, direct patient care. The role demands a seasoned professional Optometrist with a deep understanding of both the clinical aspects of optometry and the business dynamics of running a successful department. The Director will play a critical role in shaping the future of our eye care services and will be instrumental in driving our mission forward.

Requirements

  • Active and unrestricted Doctor of Optometry (OD) license.
  • A minimum of 10 years of clinical experience in optometry, with a substantial portion dedicated to supporting ophthalmic surgeries and retail optometry.
  • Thorough understanding of medical regulations, compliance standards, and best practices; operates with the highest level of ethical and professional standards.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate, lead and inspire teams, ensuring optimal performance and engagement. Cultivates an environment of mutual respect and open communication, fostering a sense of belonging and care among team members.
  • Embraces continuous learning and growth, actively participating in training programs to stay at the forefront of eyecare advancements.
  • Exceptional communication skills with ability to effectively communicate complex information to all levels of the organization.
  • Autonomous with strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills while proactively identifying solutions; escalates issues and concerns appropriately.
  • Proficiency with MS Office products and EMRs.
  • Strong relationship-building capabilities to foster connections with medical professionals, staff, vendors, and other stakeholders.
  • Ability to thrive in a dynamic environment, adapting to change and leading teams through transitions; strong commitment to enhancing patient experience and service quality.

Responsibilities

  • Strategic Leadership: In partnership with Executive Leadership, craft and execute a strategic vision for the optometry team that aligns with organizational goals. Lead change management initiatives within Optometry team to drive innovation and efficiency.
  • Clinical Excellence: Ensure the highest standards of clinical care are maintained across all aspects of optometry services, from routine eye exams to complex surgical support. Establish protocols and guidelines to enhance patient outcomes.
  • Operational Management: Optimize departmental operations for maximum efficiency and productivity. Implement systems and processes to streamline workflow and service delivery.
  • Financial Oversight: Drive revenue growth through strategic retail optometry practices and service expansion.
  • Team Development: Recruit, mentor, and develop a high-caliber team of Optometrists and support staff. Foster a culture of professional growth, teamwork, and continuous learning.
  • Collaboration and Coordination: Work closely with other departments and surgical teams to ensure a cohesive patient care experience. Facilitate multidisciplinary approaches to patient treatment and care pathways.
  • Quality and Compliance: Uphold and exceed regulatory standards and best practices in eye care. Implement quality control measures to ensure patient safety and satisfaction.
  • Market Awareness: Stay abreast of industry trends, technological advancements, and competitive landscape to position the department and the clinic/company as a leader in eye care.
  • Referral Networking: Partner with Marketing to enhance external referral relationships, support CE events and drive PEC brand awareness in the market. Foster and maintain relationships with ophthalmologists, optometrists, and other medical professionals, facilitating collaborative partnerships and referrals.
  • Patient Care: Provide both clinical leadership and high-quality, full-scope patient care within a collaborative, multi-specialty environment. In this role, you’ll guide clinical standards, support provider development, and help shape the overall patient experience, while continuing to practice at the top of your licensure. You’ll also focus on areas such as glaucoma, retina, cornea, anterior segment, dry eye, and specialty contact lenses, supported by advanced technology and a strong clinical team.
