About The Position

The Director of Nursing (DON) is a member of the management team and reports to the Health Services Administrator (HSA). The DON coordinates all clinical nursing services under the direction of the Medical Director and the Health Services Administrator. The DON promotes quality of care and the delivery of care to the inmate patients. The DON supervises directly or through qualified subordinates, all employees who provide direct patient care, including the orientation, supervision, and ongoing evaluation of the clinical personnel. The DON oversees the performance of all nursing staff and is primarily responsible for directing and motivating nursing staff and developing and implementing patient care services.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an approved School of Nursing
  • Current State Nursing License (Registered Nurse)
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing
  • Minimum of five (5) years recent clinical work experience in an acute care, clinic, or correctional setting.
  • Minimum of two (2) years correctional healthcare experience
  • Minimum of three (3) years of clinical supervisor experience.
  • Experience with healthcare quality improvement process (Risk Management, Infection Control, Utilization Management, etc.)
  • Experience with staff management / scheduling
  • Must have knowledge of and ability to independently apply nursing principles, techniques and standards.
  • Current CPR Certification
  • Must have strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Must possess general good health and retain sufficient stamina, agility, visual and auditory acuity necessary to perform all duties of the position.
  • Ability to lift and transport medical supplies and equipment up to 25 pounds.
  • Requires prolonged standing, walking, climbing numerous stairs, bending and/or pushing medication carts that weigh approximately = or >30lbs in both indoor and outdoor environments.
  • Have strong mental acuity to tolerate verbal and physical communications from inmates and maintain a professional demeanor.
  • Ability to respond quickly to emergency situations within facility

Responsibilities

  • Functions as acting Health Services Administrator when required.
  • Assists with the development of nursing and medical policies, procedures, protocols, and directives.
  • Serves as a liaison between nursing and other onsite departments and community partners.
  • Coordinates required nursing assignments and activities to ensure smooth and efficient operation of the medical department.
  • Provides required supervision and performs required performance evaluations for licensed and non-licensed nursing positions.
  • Ensures the nursing department compliance with all HFHC and Marion County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) policies, procedures, and directives.
  • Ensures nursing department compliance to all MCSO accreditation standards.
  • Coordinates and schedules nursing orientation and required training.
  • Conducts and maintains accurate and timely nursing staff performance evaluations and addresses disciplinary counseling to staff as required and applicable.
  • Complies with HIPAA and company confidentiality policies and guidelines regarding patient and staff information.
  • Ensures all nursing activities are monitored. This includes performance, record audits, controlled substance counts and inmate housing unit (Pod) rounds.
  • Performs quality assessment studies as requested and coordinates the medical unit’s infection control program.
  • Participates in audit preparations and addresses compliance and readiness..
  • Attends required departmental and agency meetings.
  • Complies with all facility and company rules and regulations.
  • Directs and covers during times of staff shortage or emergency situations to assure compliance with the Agency plan for these emergency situations as applicable to the qualifications of the individual.
  • Accepts “On-Call” responsibilities.
  • Works on special projects and assumes additional responsibility with role and scope of the organization needs as requested and/or instructed by the management.
