About The Position

Heartwood Lodge is a respected long-term care and rehabilitation community in Spring Lake, Michigan, committed to delivering compassionate, high-quality care in a warm and supportive environment. We are seeking an experienced and mission-driven Director of Nursing (DON) to lead our clinical team and uphold the highest care standards. Position Summary The Director of Nursing is responsible for the overall clinical operations of Heartwood Lodge. This senior leadership role ensures residents receive top-quality care, oversees nursing staff performance, maintains regulatory compliance, and works collaboratively with the Administrator to foster a positive, resident-centered culture.

Requirements

  • Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in the State of Michigan.
  • Minimum 3–5 years of nursing leadership experience in long-term care or skilled nursing.
  • Thorough knowledge of CMS regulations, state survey processes, and LTC best practices.
  • Proven ability to lead teams, manage performance, and foster a positive work environment.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and decision-making skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree in Nursing (BSN).
  • Experience with electronic health records (EHR) systems commonly used in LTC.
  • Successful track record improving clinical outcomes and survey performance.

Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic leadership to the nursing department, ensuring high standards of resident care.
  • Recruit, develop, mentor, and retain nursing staff, fostering a culture of teamwork, accountability, and excellence.
  • Oversee scheduling, staffing levels, and staff competence to meet resident needs.
  • Lead daily clinical operations and participate in interdisciplinary meetings.
  • Ensure the delivery of safe, individualized, and evidence-based nursing care.
  • Monitor resident conditions and provide oversight for assessments, care plans, and care delivery.
  • Lead quality assurance and performance improvement (QAPI) initiatives.
  • Review clinical data, incidents, and trends to drive continuous improvement.
  • Maintain full compliance with state and federal regulations, including CMS, MDHHS, and survey requirements.
  • Prepare for and manage state surveys; ensure timely follow-up on corrective actions.
  • Ensure accurate and complete documentation consistent with regulatory and facility standards.
  • Build positive relationships with residents and their families, addressing concerns promptly and professionally.
  • Promote a resident-centered philosophy throughout the nursing department.
  • Work closely with the Administrator, Medical Director, interdisciplinary teams, and external partners.
  • Communicate clearly with staff at all levels to support effective clinical operations.
