About The Position
The Director of Nursing (DON) is responsible for planning, organizing, directing, and evaluating all nursing services within a long-term care and skilled nursing facility. This is a hands-on leadership role that ensures high-quality resident care, regulatory compliance, and effective management of nursing staff while working closely with residents, families, and interdisciplinary teams.
Requirements
- Active Michigan Registered Nurse (RN) License (verified via Nursys)
- Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification
- Prior experience as a Director of Nursing or Assistant Director of Nursing
- Minimum 3–5 years of nursing experience
- Strong leadership, decision-making, and organizational skills
- Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities
Nice To Haves
- Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (BSN)
- Infection Preventionist Certification (or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire)
- Experience with Matrix EMR
- ACLS
Responsibilities
- Oversee all nursing services to ensure safe, effective, and compassionate resident care
- Ensure accurate assessment, care planning, implementation, and evaluation of resident care
- Monitor resident outcomes and address quality-of-care concerns
- Collaborate with physicians, therapists, and other healthcare professionals
- Supervise and support nursing staff (RNs, LPNs, CNAs, Nurse Managers)
- Recruit, hire, train, schedule, and evaluate nursing staff
- Promote teamwork, professionalism, and a positive work environment
- Address staff performance issues and conduct disciplinary actions when required
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations (CMS, state health departments)
- Prepare for and participate in surveys, inspections, and audits
- Develop and implement policies and procedures in alignment with regulatory standards
- Lead Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement (QAPI) initiatives
- Ensure ongoing education, training, and competency evaluations for nursing staff
- Stay current with best practices in long-term care nursing
- Promote infection control, safety, and risk management programs
